Sad thing is that most of the people around them at the time most likely just watched and even laughed because "he's a pussy" all the while waiting for him to defend himself so they could white Knight his ass. Only probation? Someone stupid enough(her) and entitled enough to do something like this will not have their mind changed by the inconvenience of probation.

why is it that the american justice system "plea" deals seem so permanent? like why does it matter then he signed some contract saying "Im basically fucked here, so im going to sign something that says I did something I didn't actually do" yet when he is proven innocent, the system protects itself from improving/having its flaws pointed out?
