When I worked at a restaurant as a cook, the waitresses would double their income that night in tips. Here in Canada waitresses are still paid minimum wage by the restautant and those tips aren't reported in taxes not are they likely counted in statistics in gender differences in earnings. Probably different in the states, but I've always wondered if looking closer at unrecorded earnings would bring down that gender pay gap at least a little.

Here in Canada we have to pay the waitresses minimum wage and they get tips on top of that.
