In a way, yeah - the book is VERY different than the movie, it's a lot more commentary on suffrage, civil virtue/responsibility, war - etc. I think it's great, one of my favorite books. I know you're just bringing up a(n excellent) reference - but I've always thought that Heinlein idea in Starship Troopers of having to earn one's citizenship was a rock solid one, the idea that social responsibility requires individual sacrifice. Heinlein's Terran Federation is a limited democracy, with aspects of a meritocracy in regard to full citizenship.
