Why would you ask her out on Facebook? Ask her out in person, call/text, Snapchat, any other social media, in that order. You need a second app to message on Facebook and that app is annoying so most people don't have notifications turned on.

The "today" is the difference between someone answering with the typical "good how about you" or "fine, and yourself" vs. "well, this morning I had a flat tire on the way to work, and this hot blonde stopped to see if I needed a ride, and she ended up being my ex wife's new husband's daughter, so I'm doing great..." It's really helped me start conversations in my experience.
