I guess I should specify that I mean the coalition that people call liberal in the USA. Liberalism still has stuff to offer but the liberals in my country are exceptionally corrupt and comically ineffective relative to liberals globally and historically.

I think the political discourse around gender has not substantively advanced in my adult lifetime even though the material conditions have advanced substantially. I think time is a flat circle and we just keep going round and round and round repeating the same cycles of discourse and same arguments over and over and over and over and over. I think I am living in a groundhog day-esque purgatory but Rita is yelling at me about a 50 year old grievance and there is no escape.

I'm not sure but I think it would mostly comes down to numbers. On average the manosphere is way more agregous but feminism is way more mainstream. 10 years ago I would have said feminism without hesitation but since then it feels like every high school and college boy I talked to has some major manosphere influence. The same thing is true if we think about it in terms of power. Feminists have been dominant for decades, but at this point they mostly fight for preserving small anti-egalitarian po…

Most young women would call themselves feminists if asked, citing the freedom to work or vote. I think this is basically not true and kind of degrades feminism as a historical movement and dead ideology. Feminists advocate for women or females if they are TERFS. They care about discrimination against women, women's access to contraception and abortion, women's wealth and income, preventing violence against women, and improving the lives of women broadly. This is true anecdotally but there are al…

This really is the problem. Talking about patriarchy with feminists feels a bit like talking about the Soviet Union with someone who's been cowering in a nuclear bunker for the last 60 years. Some of the arguments are outdated, some of them were always wrong, and some of them are nonsense, but all of them are motivated by a reality that has not meaningfully existed for decades.

I completely disagree with your assessment of the video. I don't think all the advice is good but I really like the tone and format. The advice is prescriptive, concrete, and practical. For the most part Adam is not talking about what's wrong, why it is wrong, or who is to blame. He is giving specific steps to achieve a goal that a lot of young men have but struggle to achieve. I love that even if I don't 100% agree with everything he says. Also, the video is not left wing. Adam is left-wing but…

So I just looked over their recent press releases about Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan. This post is misleading. The only quote from any of the press releases that is similar to this post comes from their press release on Sudan Children and women are the primary victims of this conflict. Which, in context, is kind of just true. It's definitely true for children. Everything I've read suggests that the large majority of the deaths in Sudan have been from starvation and other forms of deprivation which di…

This reminds me of something I was thinking about recently. I think the problem you're experiencing stems from the conflation of social progressives and economic leftists in politics and discourse. The people you're talking to may or may not be leftists, but the thing that animates their politics is social progressivism and fighting the culture war. To them rhetorically decentering social issues in favor of more popular and mainstream economic issues means they have lost even if centering econom…

I get the impression that you are a single mother. I was raised by a single mother. I agree with your point about the gender power imbalance but I think you're focusing on the wrong thing. Whether or not girls will like them is as much luck as skill. Make sure they take care of and invest in themselves. If you want to get women it helps to be hot, charismatic, and socially valuable. This needs to be corrected every time it is said. "Old school feminism" was not about equality. The first and second wave feminists occasionally used concepts like equality in their propaganda but it was not emphasized in internal discourse at the time and is not focuses on in the literature. Historically feminism has been about advocacy for the prospectives and interests of women. Equality only became a big talking point in the last few decades as women have started to pass men in various ways.…

Men's rights. There are lots of things we should learn from feminism. One is that, like feminism, we should center our experience and perspective in our analysis and advocacy. This inclines me to men's rights over men's liberation for 2 reasons. First, men call it men's rights so I call it men's rights. Simple as that. Second, in practice your characterization of men's liberation is correct but importantly it all happens within a feminist framework. In other words it decenters the male perspecti…

Yes... And that's good right? If you want to have influence over a politician you need them to see you as an important but losable part of their coalition. The Democrats could and should do more for men generally and black men specifically, but the fact that they are starting to think of us as an important demographic block that must be listened to and taken care of is a step in the right direction.

It’s counter productive to introduce the idea of toxic femininity but not toxic masculinity? Saw this post and thought of you. The comments perfectly exemplify both the fact that feminists understand that misandry and toxic femininity are a thing and the fact that they reeeeeeally don't want to talk about it in public.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates17/08/24 12:55 PM

It’s counter productive to introduce the idea of toxic femininity but not toxic masculinity? To feminists, Yeah absolutely. External criticism would be counterproductive to their goals. I prefer that we keep consistency. You can prefer whatever you like but if you want to understand other people's politics you have to do so on their terms. Expecting women to conform to their gender roles is seen as misogyny. Therefore, it makes more sense to label the male equivalent as misandry. I think this is…

Masculine gender roles in general are not the same as toxic masculinity. Toxic femininity is a thing but it's not talked about very much because feminists have dominated the conversation about gender and their goal is to promote the interests and perspectives of women. Within feminist literature there are critiques of toxic femininity you don't hear those critiques because feminists understand that introducing those ideas into the general discourse is counter to their political and social goals.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates16/08/24 08:08 PM
1

This is false - masculinity is the qualities or attributes regarded as characteristic of men or boys. Obviously there are such qualities that are indeed characteristic of men of boys (on average), such as relatively high testosterone levels, but many are merely based on sexist preconceptions with no strong scientific backing. I asked you for an example that fit your definition not an example that did not fit your definition. If you prefer I can just tell you what toxic masculine it is.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates16/08/24 04:53 PM

Misandry is hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against men and boys. Yes good I agree. "Toxic masculinity" generally refers to masculinity that is artificially constructed according to sexist preconceptions of men. This is a useless definition of toxic masculinity because it means all masculinity is toxic masculinity. All conceptions of masculinity are artificially constructed and sexist and preconceptions about men. Come up with a better definition or give me an example of an element of masc…

A lot of people on this sub don't like the term toxic masculinity because it's a thing feminist say. The term has become a bit of a floating signifier and it does have some really bad history within the feminist movement but I think it's useful in understanding how male stereotypes hurt them.

I think the thing you're identifying is not exactly misandry. Conservatives usually support traditional gender roles and traditional gender roles are extremely harmful to men. There are also elements of misery, like conservatives willingness to throw men's lives away in war and see us die in pursuit of profit for capitalist. MGM is another excelent example. That's different from the soul crushing social expectations conservatives have of men. As odd as this may sound I think the thing you're tal…

It seems like you don't have a good understanding of the most defensible version of toxic masculinity. That best version is that toxic masculinity is a set of expectations of men that harm men and are bad for society. Practically, the term has become a floating signifier. It generally points to a criticism of men or masculinity but it has no stable referent. Sometimes people use it in the way I just described and sometimes they use it in the way you're describing. Never heard even one feminist discuss maternal mortality except in the context of how a leading cause of death among pregnant women is murder by the father. I have heard about this in two contexts that have nothing to do with men. First, American feminists will often complain about the fact that America has some of the worst maternal mortality rates of any OECD country and our rates are getting worse while most OECD countries rates are getting better. Second, feminists who advocate for women aro…

The top comment mentioned April Wilkens so I looked her up and read most of the Wikipedia article on her along with some primary sources. It was very interesting. She is a woman who killed her ex-boyfeiend, drug dealer, sugar daddy, abuser, and rapist Terry Carlton in 1998. She tried to excuse her killing in court by arguing she had Battered Woman Syndrome, a kind of insanity defence. Reminds me of this reply I saw earlier this week. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskWomenNoCensor/s/mcoU5pICRh I think when feminists start grasping at straws or wildly postulating phrenology level pseudoscience to justify inequality you just need to laugh and disengage. There's no point in trying to argue with them or debunk their reasoning because they don't hold the views they espouse based on the reasoning they articulate. In Western society, I think there are a lot more women who will retreat into their identity and lash out when criticized then there are black people or queer people. Everybody does it. If you don't believe me go criticize a Groyper for being racist and see how they react. The difference is that women are a more numerous and socially dominant group than black people or queer people.

If you condemn that, you have to condemn female predators in the same way. If your primary goal is advocating for women there is no contradiction. You will never understand feminism until you accept that it is not gender egalitarian.

I'm always curious how they define incel in studies like these.
/r/MensRights04/03/24 01:42 PM

So then it's not a mindset and it's not a permanent condition. When you said those things you were just wrong. Now it's your belief that most of the people who are involuntarily celibate actually just need to... do what? What exactly is your advice for the tens of millions of people who cannot get sex even though they are trying but do not meet your standard for bad traits?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates28/02/24 05:32 PM

Are you saying that being poor or ugly or anxious are voluntary? Do people choose to be poor? Before you said someone was not involuntarily celibate if they eventually have sex at some point in the future even if they cannot get sex today. Given that we cannot know the future, how do you identify a real incel?

By that standard someone who could not access sex for a decade even though they were trying then got sex would retroactively have not been involuntarily celibate for the last 10 years. I don't think that makes any sense or reflects how that word is used. /r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/02/24 03:37 AM

This is going to be hyper specific. I read a law review article, I can't seem to find it now, that found divorced men are significantly more likely to succeed in arguing for parental alienation than their female counterparts. To sexually exploit someone is materially gain something by using someone else for sex. Coercion is the act of compelling someone into an action. Coercion through material deprivation is to coerc someone into an action by withholding or threatening to withhold something that they need. The most classic example of this is capitalism where people are coerced into working jobs they would not otherwise do through the threat of being deprived of food, housing, health, etc. These are all things people…

Yes, because the paternal grandparents get to have far less of a role in their grandchildren's lives. I was wondering if this was true so I looked it up and it is. There are studies showing maternal grandparents are the ones closer to their grandchildren dating back almost 30 years, if not more. Second, *why* are the paternal grandparents less involved? It seems like it might be a consequence of mothers being the primary care giver more often than a father, so this might change as more father ta…

It prepares a young man to see intimate relations with a woman as a transactional relationship. I think this is correct but I also think this is why this practice is bad. Collectively monogamy is good for men. It relies on solidarity amongst men and relational relationships between men and women. Both of these things are built on trust, compassion, and love. On average women value monogamy more than men and both men and women self report valuing monogamy. I'm not arguing for outlawing divorce or…

I don't have the experience or information to say whether this is true or not. I think there is at least a reasonable argument for it if you are a older male virgin. Pretty bad but not quite as bad as that image suggests. From the statistics I've seen roughly one third of men in that age demographic have not had sex in the last year and roughly two-thirds self report as single. Margaret Atwood was born in 1939 and this is based on a quote of hers from 1982. In that time period in the US having a husband was absolutely essential for a woman to function in the world and there…

I think a putative father has a right to know if he has a child and the possibility of future wrong doing because that right is respected does not change anything. In a perfect world a man would know as soon as he had gotten someone pregnant. Practically I believe paternity testing should be done in vetero. If the woman refuses to have the test done it should be done immediately after birth and there should be a database like the putative fathers registry but national which males should be autom…

I am serious and I know it's not your point. This woman's point wasn't that scientific racism is okay but I still see it as a pretty major problem with her view. Reading the abstract it would have been more accurate for me to say black judges sentence black juveniles more harshly than white juveniles. It's been a while since I reviewed it.

Ahh you're talking about the early social Internet. I would have loved to have been there but unfortunately, at the time, I was too young to be engaging in this kind of discourse. The worst most unhinged public internet discourse I was ever able to engage in was early 2010s 4chan, which was insane compared to modern Reddit but was tame compared to what you are talking about from what I've heard.

I am not aware of anyone who thinks porn, in general, is exploitative of the consumer. (Edit: I'm sure they exist. The internet is large and you can always find someone who will support a stupid argument.) The people who are opposed to porn are generally opposed to it because they think it hinders social functioning or is degenerate. I hav…

My guess would be other correlated factors. For example socially conservative people are less likely to cohabitate before marriage and are less willing to get divorced. Their inclusion in a sample will contribute to a correlation between cohabitating before marriage and divorce even though the causative factor, their social views, is not represented in the data. She suggested that bigotry is not bigotry if it is legitimized through statistics and science. I asked if she would apply that rule to ant-black racism and information that is commonly brought up by white supremacists. Most bigots backup their bigotry with technically accurate information. Jews really did represent a disproportionate number of bankers in Weimar Germany. Evidence is observables with factual properties that are indicative of something being true to the exclusion of its negation. Shame was an important and useful part of feminist activism through the 20th century and remains so today. This includes forcing lots of changes in men's expectations with regard to women. Most people seem to get mad when it's an older man dating a much younger woman. This isn't a study it's a blog post with massively biased language and deceptive figures. I was taught to differentiate good sources from bad sources in my freshman year of college. This has all the hallmarks of a bad source. Setting that aside, if I were to take the analysis in this blog post seriously, where exactly do you think the 80/20 rule is disproved?
/r/PurplePillDebate12/08/23 05:23 AM

The source provided suggests that women also message more attractive men disproportionately. The analysis suggests that it's less disproportionate but they don't offer any actual numbers to back that up and given that the data was not normally distributed by subjective attractiveness it's really hard to compare the graphs.

Objectively society can force women into relationships. Most societies forced most women and most men into relationships for most of human history. Regardless this is a non sequitur. I'm saying that people kill themselves because they do not have the things that they feel make life worth living. Sex, love, or access to reproduction is that to some people. You're misusing the idea of fragile masculinity. The idea is not that men are weak, that's just a thing some hateful people say. The idea is that masculinity itself is a relatively fragile social construct.

I mean we literally did saddle the Axis powers with lots of debt, execute many of their leaders, and occupy them for decades. The difference is that they really did the things that they were being held accountable for whereas men in the 21st century I have no responsibility for the historical crimes of other men.

In a normative context my view is that appropriateness is just the consensus among all involved parties that express their view. This doesn't make any sense. If there is a presumption of 50/50 custody you would still need to hire a family law specialist. This change wouldn't even necessarily decrease the amount of litigation because many people are still going to fight for majority custody or minority custody of their kids.

Misandrists don't like men's rights for the same reason white supremacists don't like black people having rights. The ideology is built around a zero-sum view of social power. To them advocating for the out group means advocating against the in group.

Okay and? There is a big difference in divorcing to have control of finances vs “for money” like a get rich quick scheme. What if the husband is spending money on strip clubs, alcohol and gambling? What if he is financially abusing his wife? If a wife wants to divorce so she can have control over finances I wouldn’t automatically assume it’s a nefarious motive. It really depends on what you mean by having money. If your married your partner is likely going to want some say about how money is spent, especially if they are the working partner. The strategy is to make women completely economically dependent on men. This what aboutism is absolutely pathetic. Women shouldn't stand up for men reciprocally. They should do it because it's the right thing to do. Otherwise it's meaningless and con…

I think you're fundamentally correct here but I don't think that's a good thing or that the solution can be found within the system. I believe that when someone is under the threat of violence they will be more polite and incentivised to deesculate. However, I would like to live in a society where we can simultaneously be polite to each other and not be on the brink of violence. There are other mechanisms for encouraging people to be nice to each other and penalizing rudeness.

I get it but we need to be able to simultaneously agnolege the fact that men make up the majority of the governing elites and women's interests are put above men's interest by government. That's the thing that I find so strange. Politics is one of the last and strongest bastions of traditional patriarchy in my home country of America and yet government serves men's interests so poorly, including in the health information you layed out here.

I'm glad you think it's funny. It's supposed to be kind of ridiculous to point out that your excuse is ridiculous. Your just doing a feminised version of the classic "look what you made me do." It's an excuse that can justify anything so why is my example invalid? I really want to know, what's the difference between saying if a woman is rude to you it's your fault verses if a man hits you it's your fault?

Alternative solution maybe women should start bearing a little more responsibility for partner seeking behavior so that men don't have to do that if we ever want to meet anyone. Basically none of us enjoy it.

Why do you think there is a hard line between someone not acknowledging your presence and them doing something to piss you off? If you know they are there and are trying to get your attention and you are not paying attention to them then you are making an active decision to ignore them. Even my dog can tell when I'm ignoring him and gets mad about it. We aren't mindless gas molecules bouncing off each other nor are we dogs. Accusing someone of being overly emotional as an excuse for not engaging with their arguments is a tactic I typically see used by misogynists. It's interesting that so many misandrists adopt the tactics of traditional misogyny. Yeah but the vast majority of those politicians are men. In the United States less than 30% of federally elected officials are women. In the European Union where there has been an active effort to get more women into politics it's a little under 40%. Disproportionately, men run the systems that allow society to function and disproportionately we run them for the benefit of women. I think there's a pretty common view amongst trad-cons that sex is a wife's duty to her husband but I don't know anyone who thinks you have a duty to have sex with someone soon after you start dating. The closest thing I have heard to someone expressing that idea is that some mem will say if a woman expects a man to pay for a date then he should expect sex in return. As to the part about blaming a woman who's not good at sex. Some w…

Very different from your choices but Phil Dunphy from modern family. I have never watched all the way though the show but he seems like a really good guy. He is a Chear leader in college but has no shame about it. His family is not super nice to him but he tries to stay positive anyway. He tries to embrace and enjoy his work without taking it too seriously. He does a lot for his family but he's not a total pushover, like after haily gets arrested. All around, he seems like a very positive depict…

I did say "When I was a kid I was taught that feminism was equality." Then I said " When I got to college and started reading some actual feminists and I was exposed to a whole bunch of different definitions many of which conflicted with each other." So obviously the answer to your question is not. Now it seems you are the one ignoring context. 🤔 I was very clear about this the first time. I didn't say the first point was correct. I'm really getting the sense that you are completely enraged, ski…

I'm sorry but you're just wrong I don't know where you're getting these characteristics and definitions but they are not reflective of how feminism is practiced in the real world. I grew up a feminist and was a feminist through college and for a while afterwards. While I was in college I read plenty of feminist literature. Of the three characteristics you listed I'm pretty sure only the first one is ubiquitous amongst feminist ideologies. I'm not familiar with the Duluth model but Mary Koss suck…

Your right I did. I disagree with your quite from yourself. I think what this might come down to ultimately is that I'm not an anti-feminist and it seems like you are. I talk about this more in some other comments on this post but I think a lot of the feminist action in Iran is good and I support them in doing it. I'm pro men's rights not anti women's rights. In my view, feminism is the practice of centering women's perspectives and interests in society, politics and the economy. That does not r…

You're right I didn't notice that. With that in mind your hypothetical is not representative of the real world. This isn't a game of yandere simulator. Women basically never act the way your depicting. Even men barely ever act that way. The sort of possessive behavior we're talking about is almost exclusively exhibited by people in romantic relationships or close friendships.

I just did and what you said was this. Believing that brown men oppress the people with whom they have their closest emotional bonds, or are happy to sit by while others do so, is racist. That is much closer to "criticizing a brown person is racist" then to "Brown men are monstrous and brown women are weak". The second thing references specific racial stereotypes that you did not mention in previous comment. If criticizing a person of color without reference to those stereotypes, which you did n…

If things were that simple and straightforward you would be correct but I don't think women, or people in general, are that naive. Let's take your example, the first time you're crazy girlfriend harasses your female friends for encroaching on her man you don't have any responsibility, unless you could have predicted the behavior based on other factors. But every time after that I think you do bear some responsibility in fact you bear an increasing amount of responsibility over time especially if…

So I'm going to try and divide the conversation here a little bit. I think India is a complicated example in some ways feminists have made a lot of progress towards equality, in some ways they have passed the point of equality and are entrenching themselves as a political hegemon, and in some ways there is still progress to be made by feminists in India. Basically India is complicated, there's some places where I would agree with indian feminists and some places where I would disagree with them.…

Y'all are going to hate this but I was a feminist for most of my life and this is not a thing amongst IRL feminists. They don't make fun of gym bros and only occasionally make fun of meat heads no more than anyone else. From my experience the stigmatization of men exercising is only a thing in terminally online feminists. if I had to guess why I would say probably because women find the idea of physically strong men to be threatening but the reality appealing. That's just my two cents from havin…

I think this may be true but it's important to remember that the white night is acting on behalf of the woman he's simping for. Even if she has not asked him to do something specifically she still bears some responsibility for setting the gears in motion that led to his actions. She is a necessary cause of his actions even if she is not the proximal cause.

The problem with this argument is that it treats men as a monolith. Even if we take these ideas at face value and ignore women's agency entirely it's not the fault of poor men that they are exploited by rich men, it's not the fault of murdered men that they were murdered by men, and it's not the fault of a suicidal man that he was taught a toxic version of masculinity by other men. I'm vegan and this argument reminds me of when people say it's fine for humans to eat meat because other animals ea…

IMO the reason men receive this reaction when we talk about being sexually assaulted by a woman is because our consent is presumed. This stems from the fact that men are not seen as fully human with individual desires and motivations. Instead we are viewed as a constantly horny monolith. Thus from their perspective affirmative consent does not apply to men.

The funniest part about this is the person complaining about all the men in the comments section who feel threatened. Like the entire post is predicated on someone who feels threatened. If the men's Right movement is ever going to have any political success it can't just be about individual grievances. I agree that some subs are just meant for people to vent but this shouldn't be one of them. It should be about highlighting men's issues and promoting men's rights.

This comports with my experience. I used to be a feminist and I think in a lot of ways feminists and men's rights people are pretty good mirror of each other, even though both groups hate that comparison. The main difference is that within feminist communities there's more camaraderie and sisterhood than In MRA spaces. IMO it's because so many people around here are right wing lunatics who think the free market and competition can solve all our problems. The free market isn't going to lower the …

You're really going to be this upset over at 2% change in the gender makeup of a single University in a country you don't even live in? A change to a system that already systemically advantages your in group. I swear to God people like you are as bad as the feminists, reflexively defending your ingroup regardless of context. Don't pretend you have principles when it's so clear your only motivation is in group bias.

I don't think I said that anyone was being discriminated against, or that the system is sexist, or that women don't have free will. I don't know where you're getting any of that from. I think I've offered an extremely plausible explanation for why there's so few women at the University currently and why artificially inflating their numbers for a period of time could move them towards equality long term. This would not require indefinite preferential treatment for women. But would provide more op…

I did not say that women check the demography of the University before applying though I'm sure they do, I certainly did before applying to colleges. Yes I think that misleading information on representation would probably make more women apply. That's why colleges and universities feature a diversity of genders and races in their advertising even if it's not reflective if reality. Because they're trying not to alienate people. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "strength of woman" or "stren…

Honestly, I would just make fun of her. The first point is just so funny. She's equating vaginal sex with anal sex so first i would try to find out if she does anal, and make sure she knows the difference between a vagina and an asshole. Then focus on wether gay men are exempt from her criticisms of the patriarchy and if lesbians and children are included. That could be a fun start. Unless you're trying to maintain her as a friend in which case I wouldn't bother discussing any of this with her. …

The short answer your question is that segregated systems like this are self perpetuating. It's like this, there are no women at the University so women don't see it as a place and lack the social infrastructure to prepare for university. Thus very few women apply to the university and a proportionally even smaller number get in. Haven't gone to a technical University for computer science I can tell you from personal experience this is how it works. You break a cycle by encouraging more women to…

Toxic masculinity is a concept originally created to describe the ways in which masculinity can alienate a man from society. Incidentally it was also originally came up with by men, though that is not relevant here. A man not reporting abuse because it's emasculating is quintessential toxic masculinity. It's masculinity getting in the way of doing what will make you happy. I agree with you broadly that it can be unhealthy for men to buy into a feminist worldview and that many women weapons terms…

She's a bigot and it's not unreasonable for you to take it seriously. Female identitarians sometimes try to reuse attacks that have been levies against them historically against other groups. The logic is "if it worked against us it can work for us". Here, she is repurposing a tactic of infantilization.
