Treating women as individuals with respect ("as friends"), sure. Treating females as male friends will lead to bad outcomes, females are not males. All those unwritten rules about male friends, "bros", whatever, don't apply.

Computational genomics is an area where mistakes can easily be made. The basis is statistics ("lies, damned lies, and statistics") which are incredibly easy to get wrong. Published papers in the very top tier journals (Nature and Science) routinely have glaring statistical errors uncovered after they have been published. Science is first-wins in many ways, people rush papers into publication. Peer review uncovers some things and misses others. Of note is that the article is a few years old. Have…

Marrying and having children is step one in continuing one's culture. In order to pass anything on to the next generation, there has to be a next generation.

The comparisons with the Roman Empire are a bit tortuous; problem is there were a lot of things going on, sorting out cause and effect is tricky this late. Interesting line of comparisons nonetheless. Say what you will about cultures with an overbearing religion, generally that means boys have to marry and start a family to get laid. Hormones being what they are, the boys marry and start families in their early 20s. Feminism, breakdown of family structures, whatever. These days, boys and girls c…

That is my understanding as well, that the Dubai police will ignore many things relating to non-Muslims drinking alcohol and male/female relations unless there is a complaint. Dubai is great. Good for visiting, and it looks perfectly viable for long term living as well.

Move to the UAE. Where it is legally possible to have four wives, it makes it impossible for them to each get a 50:50 split. They leave with what they came with. Of course, you can't just have a conjugal relationship without marriage there, can't even be in the same hotel room as a woman unless she is your wife (or close relative), so there's that. TL;DR: thought experiment. Where multiple wives are legal, the 50:50 split goes out the window.

That would be pretty funny, in a way, if it was true. I have a hypothesis that women will leave if the wealth drops by 30%-40%, regardless of the absolute numbers. $50K to $30K, leave. $3M to $2M, leave. If that was the trigger for Mrs. Bezos, then $100B -> $70B -> leave. Ouch.

Western divorce conventions encourage divorce. A rational economic agent of a woman will understand that half of any wealth her husband has created is, under Western rules, hers. She can pull the divorce trigger once and only once; every day she has to look at the outlook, and if she thinks fortunes are declining under the man's management, as a rational economic agent looking out for Number 1 (herself), it's time to take the money and run. What's love got to do with it, as the song says. Basica…

Mothers are usually the ones driving the transgender treatments for boys. In Freudian terms they want to castrate them, remove their penis. Very similar to FGM for girls, which is also (usually) pushed by women. FGM is considered double plus bad (it kind of is), early age hormone treatments are considered so double plus good that courts will order them. F-ing up girls in Africa bad, f-ing up boys in the West good. Go figure.

It's perfectly reasonable to prefer communications to be through the parent. She can always write an old-fashioned letter, and you can respond via the parents. To handle it better in the future, maybe avoid mentioning the outside world, just as a matter of etiquette you would prefer to communicate through the parents. Adults have no business being "friends" with ten year olds, and as a mentor (more likely what you are) immediate contact is not needed. It is valuable at that age (I think) to have…

What is going on? All over the world, or at least in the US, Europe, and Africa from personal experience, people are going in for ridiculously over the top weddings. People that are making payments on their cars and probably a lot more are pretending to be multi-millionaires when they get married.

They become hard core incels, and yes: supposedly in places where multiple wives are relatively common, e.g. South Sudan, you wind up with a lot of young violent men. Counterargument is that in 2019 you don't need to travel that far to find an angry incel culture. Seems to be getting tougher and tougher for the young US male population to mate. Rich dudes in the West will just have one wife and N mistresses, or zero wives and N girlfriends. A low income male will still be out of luck, it's tough…

The Western system of full community property encourages it. Imagine if Wall Street paired every rising entrepreneur with a dedicated short seller. The short seller has no particular job, doesn't really need to understand where the money comes from, and gets half of everything on the day they choose. They have to pick the right day. As long as things are getting richer and richer, it is to the short seller's advantage to stay put. The instant things look as though they might have peaked, it's ti…

God made big men, and God made little men, and Samuel Colt made the .45 to even things out. (there are many variations of this phrase. I'm not sure which is official, if any)

Haven't been to Nigeria, over in East Africa things are definitely a bit more raw. Frankly preferable. As a Westerner, not too much of a douchebag and basically polite, things are safe enough. They won't bust down your door and kill you for belonging to the wrong tribe because you don't belong to any tribe :-) (disclaimer: busting down doors etc. is rare, only to be concerned about in times of political unrest)

What am I missing? I know African roads can be dangerous, but that looks like a mostly empty freeway. The safest road in Africa from the looks of it.

California marriage laws are at one end of the spectrum; divorce for any reason or no reason, theoretically the non- or less- wealth creating spouse (usually the woman) takes half of accumulated wealth. In practice due to white knighting the woman (not man) gets more than half. At the other end might be Islamic "marriage" which is actually a different institution. Aside from dowry issues, divorcing spouses leave, more or less, with what they came with, if there are no kids (big enormous "if"). M…
