It's a pretty normal thing for defense to ask for a dismissal after the plaintiff rests. Judges rarely grant it unless it's just overwhelmingly obvious that the plaintiff failed to meet their prima facie case. It's even more rare when it's a high profile case as the judge would rather the findings of fact be with the jury rather than the judge.

The reporter wasn’t present when the event occurred. By using the term “allegedly”, they are reporting that the police are asserting she did xyz rather than the reporter is asserting she did xyz. This protects the reporter from a slander law suit.

I think she was definitely a strange one. But I think her observation here is correct; in personal relationships as well as the world stage. An example would be the Nazi’s in World War Two relying on civilized countries desire for peace to get positioned for their eventually invasion of Europe.
