No, it can just be a guy who's telling you about his hobby. You can make it less "intimate" sounding if you said something like "You seem really passionate about it. It sounds really cool!" I think the key to compliments are moreso about words of affirmation than appearance. compliment what they do or what they enjoy: "I love it when you get so fired up about <insert some hobby they're geeking out on>" "You did a really great job back there with <some task, especially a task he might not think he did so well on>" Things like that. I wish it was like it was a hundred years ago. Guys hugged, put their arms around each other, held hands even, and nobody thought anything of it and I feel like we've lost that affection and it affects us negatively. I wish places like BWW had guys only and girls only nights midweek like once a month.
