I suppose that I am disagreeing with the weight you are according to those strands of Buddhism you call "original". Let me give an example. In the Tibetan tradition, there's a lot of emphasis placed on the no-self teachings, and they are elaborated on in a very different way than one finds in the Pali Cannon. I found them quite valuable, even though they were somewhat at odds with the Buddha's 'original' teachings. You see my point?

Kudos for being well-read on such a worthwhile topic. But I wouldn't be so quick to denounce all those forms of Buddhism which don't embody the Pali Cannon to the hilt as 'corrupted': there are some aspects of the Mahayana that were novel contributions to Buddhist thought. Also not all Mahayana schools endorse the practice of Tantra (Pure Land, Zen come to mind) so perhaps you are painting with too broad a brush here.
