I only just recently noticed this at the restaurant where I work. I don't have a problem with it really, it just took me a while to notice.

The beginning of this post lol I have a pretty straightforward explanation, and this is just my own perspective: I think a lot of groups on the internet just don't like seeing men standing up for each other and banding together against the hatred for them. I've never been involved in a situation like this, but I believe you have a point about her mother about telling her sooner rather than later. It's already a messy situation, why wait longer than necessary? And what if she finds out from someone else? The last thing anyone would want is for someone who knows nothing about the situation to let it slip.
