If you're thin forget abs, trimming down is the last thing you want. Bulk up so that your presence is felt when you enter a room. If you eat caloric excess and the proper amount of protein you should be able to gain 10-20lbs of healthy weight. See a personal trainer who understands diet to know what I'm talking about.

He feels beta because he's afraid to do it. You're not reading between the lines. On some level he wants to be the sort of man who is unafraid to do these sorts of things - and whose action is dictated by desire and not fear. He would need to tell us exactly what freaks him out about it - but I say if it's an issue of facing internal fears of inadequacy and not external fears of rape, craziness, etc... then I think it is appropriate for him to feel emasculated by the situation.

Eastern Cultures - Taoists, Confucian and Zen cultures - have always approached truth more plainly than western cultures. IMO this is seen in their approach to sex as well as their more non-theistic religions. The West is more prone to constructing convenient lies. A Chinese intellectual wrote a book called "The art of living" which probably identifies the reason for this: Caucasians are more idealistic.
