She learns to swim in a pool, where there are no fish. Eventually she swims in an ocean, where there are fish. She uses what she's learned to help her understand how to swim around the fish. Boys and girls develop differently. Also, as someone else pointed out, there are physical differences in the ways that boys and girls can best defend themselves. They're not given the vocal and physical skills to ward off an attacker. On the other side, they're not using those skills to intentionally hurt their siblings, friends or enemies.
