It's a sport that demands cooperation because you need at least one partner every time you go to the gym. Climbing outside is more fun than in the gym, so once you meet some folks inside can weasel your way into joining some outdoor trips. In my experience, this eventually leads to invitations to non-climbing activities. See if they have an email list set up that you can be added to.
