The "our generation can't afford a house" thing is bullshit. Well, yeah, but what percentage of 18-34 males are willing to do whatever it takes to make it as an adult? It's an unfortunate development, but the "our generation has an incredibly high failure rate" thing seems to be becoming more and more true with each successive crop. There was a post about it a while back. And yes, those number are for the general adult population in the US. Found a source with the same info: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/12/22/americans-are-drinking-themselves-to-death-at-record-rates/ Scroll halfway down for the chart. I was a little high on the average for the top decile as a whole, but the top 10% of that group is way over 100 alcohols per week.

30% of people drink zero alcohol. Another 30% have about 1 alcohol per week. There's an exponential curve up from there with the top 10% having somewhere over 100 alcohols per week. The answer is not to "not drink alcohol", but to not be a person who is behaviorally out of control. The person your advice applies to would benefit by lowering their alcohol consumption, but that's only a symptom of the deeper psychological issues that are probably ruining their life.

How do you win any game with established rules? You study them, and learn exactly how to use them to your advantage. Read, go to seminars, watch videos, take courses, and stuff like that.
