One of the previous answers was likely spot-on: these decisions don't work in a grey area. You are now the bad guy, she is getting away, talking to you would risk the reality seeping through that you are not completely a bad guy at all. Decision was taken, to follow through there can no longer be any openness to the other person. You are bad. It's amazing to me how people can do this and shut off completely like that, like there's a valve they can control...

The worst were mutual friends espousing the ideal of happiness, that the pursuit of happiness trumps a commitment to see things through despite long periods where communication falters. It's all so trite.

It's difficult to suddenly see and deal only with the bad and move on but as others have said, someone who is able to do that to you should not be in your life.

I've heard of a few anecdotal situations where the man just says, to hell with this, the kids are grown, I'm unhappy and I see a clear road to happiness. It's the one "kids are full-grown" part that I accept as valid. Why suffer through when the greater responsibilities have been met? The eagerness to put a ring on it is quickly supplanted by the much more powerful need for emotional and sexual attention. It by far outweighs one man's ability to deliver. And even when delivered in fair measure, it's never going to be enough. It's no coincidence that divorce fillings are initiated by women at 70% vs 30% by men.

I guess it's better to find out, even though you already knew it had to be something like that just because it pretty much always is The details will hurt like little else but there is also some comfort in knowing that it wasn't you who couldn't stick to the basics of honesty and commitment to the bigger picture. It's just that the fall-out affects everyone, it can be life shattering, also for the kid(s)(I have two) who are dragged into a chaos because of the romantic/sexual needs of one person.…

Not sure how the law works where you are but it can't be that you just get to say, I'm fed up with all of this, I'm not happy, I want out. I understand that many want out but just wanting out to pursue happiness and damn the consequences for the others in this equation. You must present a reason of gross neglect, a significant failure or fault or incident that will sway a judge to say, sure, you go on your merry way, you deserve the break.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
