Well, during world war 2, men were chomping at the bit to rush off and serve. Bit of a generalisation, sure, but there was a prevailing sense of pride that people felt when it came to defending the country. The same reason a lot of lottery winners go broke. If you've never had to manage a large amount of money, and are suddenly responsible for that task (as opposed to gradually, like many self-made wealthy people) the failure rate is quite high.
