In my country lifetime can only be given for certain crimes and it is real lifetime. Although, it can't be applied to the following: women, people who commited a crime before they were 18 and people who were older than 65 when they were sentenced. And those who've been sentenced for lifetime technically can apply for parole, but not before they spent 25 years in prison. And a bunch of other conditions that make it nearly impossible.

I would also put part of blame on the mother, but not because she reported a crime.
