Amen. I too am an attorney and agree 100% with this.

I think you mean "sex moratorium," not "sex memorandum."

This is truly awesome advice. OP should read, re-read, re-re-read and follow.

In the immortal words of Maverick from Top Gun: "Eject! Eject! Eject!" The world is full of women. The longer you stay, the more at risk you are. Few things seem as eternal as child support payments and many jurisdictions tack on spousal support obligations for longer-term marriages.

I have been a practicing attorney for 25+ years (though do NOT consider myself an expert on family law matters). I would STRONGLY encourage you to look at the website for the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. They can be found at AAML.org. The lawyers who are members of the AAML are the best in the field. The website has a "find a lawyer" mechanism for locating a member - in whatever state you find yourself. With a 25+ year marriage and a stay at home spouse, you might be looking a perman…

I am intrigued by the fact that you described the situation as "Accidental Dread," but that doesn't appear to be what's occurring in your marriage. For most people, purchase of a home represents the largest purchase or investment they will ever make. You state "we purchased a new home," but that you put it in an LLC for which you are the sole member. Not sure what you are attempting to accomplish here but it seems selfish, irresponsible and oblivious. What if you and a business partner jointly o…

Mediation is voluntary - as are the agreements made to end disputes through mediation. Your post sounds whiny and like you're a victim. Your spouse didn't show up at the voluntary process that would have made resolution easier? So what? Do what others have suggested: Get the best legal representation you can; fight for your kids' sake; do NOT weaponize them or attempt to alienate them from their mother; man up and show your kids what a responsible parent looks like; do NOT complain - especially …

It is imperative that you consult with a local attorney about this. The issue is what is known as "comingling." If you fail to keep inherited assets and property "separate," such property can be deemed a marital asset and divided in a divorce.

Sorry for the delayed response. (I'm new to Reddit and really wasn't aware that you'd responded to my post. I think the fact that your spouse "moved away" and essentially "abandoned" your child for 18 months puts you in the driver's seat. You ARE the primary caretaker for your child. You have been making choices for him - what he should do, where he shoould go to school, etc. You should register him for school where YOU want him to go. Make HER go to Court if she wants to change it. What she wan…

I happen to be an attorney and I have frequently represented men in divorce siutations who are afraid of what their former or soon to be former spouses might say about them to others. It may be possible to have the divorce proceedings "sealed" so the idly curious don't have access. You might also negotiate a "non-disparagement and confidentiality" provision in your decree of divorce. All of that pales in comparison, however, to the excellent comment from redwall92: If you're unhappy with the res…

I am an attorney. It is VERY normal for extended family to help with legal fees. You have significant advantages as primary care-taker for last 18 months. Do NOT yield this just because "Momma" has moved back to town. Do not surrender ANYTHING until ordered to do so. The status quo favors you now. Do not voluntarily change things.

I am an active LDS male who lives in Utah. I am also a very good divorce attorney. The stuff your spouse is doing has little or nothing to do with the Mormon church and I fear you are putting yourself in a horrible position vis a vis a potential divorce. I monitor this sub for the comments and the answers to questions and I certainly am not here looking for clients. Nonetheless, I fear you are at great risk. PM me if you want referrals to competent attorneys.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
