Actually, one way in which I think my thought experiment differs from the debate topic is that stealing is wrong in most contexts, but having sex isn't. Sex only becomes cheating in the context of the agreement the husband and wife have with one another. If the wife doesn't uphold the agreement, I don't see why the husband should. It's more like if the hitchhiker agreed to pay the driver back by treating him to lunch once they got into town.
