That's not "feminism". That's clickbait.

I am happy to concede to whatever terminology you wish to use if it means we can discuss the issue.

Women earn less than men as a population. This is a fact. We can and should debate about choices made by individuals; whether this is an issue that society should care about etc. but don't debate the fact. It makes you look like a creationist.

Definition:- Wage gap

While I agree that Audi fucked up with this tweet, I think there are many disingenuous (or willfully ignorant) comments saying things like "if the wage gap existed, why wouldn't businesses hire more women?". I don't think this is beneficial to the cause. The wage gap is measured as the ratio of female to male median yearly earnings among full-time, year-round workers. It is a population measure.

OK, happy to concede this point. Let's focus on something we can both agree on. Improper use of 'alternate', when people mean to say 'alternative'.

Legally maybe, but are we really wanting to reduce this issue down to legal definitions of words, or would you prefer to focus instead on the meaning and looking for ways to forge solutions... Aaaaand now I sound like a management consultant.

Because definitions are totally relative and contextual and unless we are talking about the law (which creates the very adversarial system I am trying to argue against and which creates a lot of the issues between men in women IMO), limiting their definition rather than focusing on the meaning and content of those involved only serves to create conflict.

I think the fact that we are talking about the definition of a word means we are not talking about the real issue.

Fair call. I did miss your point and your observation was both correct and very well stated.

I think we should stop trying to draw lines around definitions that simply serve to define the borders of conflict and instead focus on looking at what could bring us together.

That's your interpretation, which is fine. The threats made against Watson are specifically for rape, which is not childish and is a serious issue. You don't get to define how someone else interprets something. If she reasonably infers or fears for her safety, then why do you get to choose that her fear is unfounded?

It's funny because this subreddit is just a huge circlejerk where consenting opinions get upvoted and dissenting opinions downvoted. It's exactly the same thing you all rail against when it's done by women. The few voices in here that speak moderately and define that the issues are not black and white, but demand subtlety, nuance and consideration are either downvoted to oblivion or lost in the noise. This subreddit almost performs exactly the opposite function to its apparent raison detre - to …

So it's a game of semantics, based on your interpretation on how someone else should interpret something, totally out of context. The specific threat in this case was for rape, which has a very specific context in our society and if you don't understand that interpretation and context is important, then there's not much point continuing.

That is your right. I've read everything he's ever written, will read everything he writes in the future and am a huge fan, but on this issue he got it wrong.

Her original behaviour was a relatively benign comment on her youtube channel. Then when attacked by Dawkins she defended herself. The demonisation and defining of the issue in absolute terms serves no-one and helps nothing. Dawkins got it wrong by claiming that Watson has no right to feel the way she felt and claiming that only "real" downtrodden women like those in Islamic countries have the right to speak up. On that basis, Dawkins would also have a bit to say about this subreddit, which exis…

No, not as opposed to anything. Just whiny. Real whiny.

We'll never know if she did or didn't receive "rape threats." What evidence would do it for you? The threats are in the public sphere...

Someone should really get a pineapple and slowly twist it up your arse. Not me of course... just "someone". And not saying that someone "will" do it, just that they should. Now, let's get into the details of how that's not a threat based on your definition of what a threat is...

she said she started getting rape threats in the mail... FTFY The Skeptics Guide boys have supported her re: the emails on their show. The article you link to even supports her claim. That is a cheap tactic, and in your case, also poorly implemented.

When in fact, she never said anything of the sort and you are creating a strawman to make your own weak opinion slightly stronger.

Can you reference your claims that Watson described the guy "using serial killer like tactics to get her into a secluded area, where she couldn't run and an attempted rape"? Pretty sure she just said that what he did was probably not a good idea in context. What she reacted against was not him, but Dawkins commentary, which is basically the same commentary made in this post. i.e. that the only people allowed to speak about discrimination are those at the very limits of discrimination, such as Mu…

No, it's not almost like that. It's almost like you miss the point.
