6	Why White Straight Males Don't Talk About Privilege My objection to all this spouting about "privilege" is that it makes activism about resentment and shaming of people who don't have certain disadvantages, rather than improving the lives of people who are disadvantaged, which is what activism should be. Also, not sure how good this is, but worth a try: Most cities also have an information phone number (usually it is 311) to get you in touch with an operator to connect you to the correct department. In the UK, if you're not on the birth certificate you need to apply for a court order to get rights as you do not have rights by default as the mother does. I'm not sure what the situation is in the US. If America has an equivalent of the British Citizens Advice Bureau who give free, sound advice I would suggest going there immediately.
