If he was slapped by a male employee, and called the police, without physical retaliation to the male, then that male would be charged with assault. If the manager was a woman, and the employee was a male, he'd be charged with assault, and a bigger sentence. I don't totally agree with the reaction, but the woman had to at least be expecting a slap back.
