If you bothered to read my comment, you'd notice that I mentioned least resistance. I support a total ban, but it will face strong opposition from traditionalists. Same-sex marriage wasn't legalized overnight, civil unions/domestic partnerships were a compromise and a stepping stone for progress, but the fight continued for years after in the US. If you want real change, you have to be willing to accept and accumulate small victories until it becomes the norm.
