I’m not sure why people keep suggesting this, when every other post mentions someone getting screwed by not having or having the wrong lawyer. I mean we’re not at each other’s necks, but yeah we argue over everything things obviously aren’t that smooth. Im not trying to be a dick; I do appreciate the advice. It would be awesome to not pay for a lawyer but I just don’t see us both smiling and walking away.

Thank you. I just wasn’t sure If the papers had to be stamped by the county/state first. I’ve heard that the person who files first has a (slight) edge in court. That is, who becomes the petitioner? The person who gets served first? The person who files the form first? Maybe I’m missing something, but If I just download a form and have my buddy give it to her, what’s to stop her from doing the same thing and claiming she is the one filing for divorce on me? Like when your boss says, “you’re fire…

Thank you. Sounds like I'm just overthinking this.

Thank you for the links! This is exactly what I was looking for. Your last paragraph is what scares me. I would love to not waste money on the lawyers, but I don’t see her agreeing to an alimony amount among other things. I’m worried that we would try this route and then just lawyer up in the end.

The phones are all in my name so I should be ok there. I’ve got the kids college fund in its own account labeled college, but we both have access to it, so that could be a problem. What about a pension from a previous job (while we were together). Could she tap into that as well as the 401k and such?

This is my first post, but I’m sure it’s a similar story. I think I really need to look into this. I’m in Snohomish county but I’m not sure it’s much different from King. Sounds like I have a lot of research to do!

Excellent thank you. Having a bug out bag is probably good to have anyway. How would I open a bank account without her knowing? I’m worried statements or such would come to the house.

I know she has a stash of cash, but I feel like the rest of our money is accounted for. I could ask, but I doubt she would admit to anything if there were separate funds somewhere.

Solid advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to post this.

Sorry, I read somewhere that a spouse applied for college and therefore was trying to “improve her potential earnings” and the other spouse was held responsible for half. Maybe it was just a special situation, but I could see her trying to tilt things in her favor with as many tricks as possible if she knew I hadn’t filed yet but soon would.
