I think it delends on how confident you are in your looks vs how attractive and out of your league you think the girl is. If your self estrem is low to a point where that girl being attracted to you is inconceivable guy will miss even the most obvious of flirt signals. Its an easy way to hide from rejection as well.

The only thing that saved me from this was to stop watching porn and limit masturbation frequency but when i did it was without porn. I realized that this seemingly harmless habit was causing me to have performance anxiety and an unrealistic expectation of what sex is actually like.
