For further reading I really recommend The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, not only does it explain why the brain likes living in the head, it also explains how to get out of it

Hey dude, I know how this feels, some months ago I was in the same situation, throwing myself out, trying to fake things. Because, why not trying it? Why not go for the talk/the dance with the girl? Read "Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking", worked very well for me. And yes, you feel better after quitting, the mood gets better, sense of smell and taste too. Besides that, your health, of course.
