If you mean in the context of LGBTQ, I guess it's because they're all minorities (with a history of discrimination) in a somewhat similar matter since gender - yours or other people's - is a key part in both.

One way to think of gender is as a color spectrum. If men represent blue and women represent red, genderqueer people may be a different color or somewhere in between, like purple. If you're a guy, you can in a way feel it - you feel comfortable having it within your sense of identity and it equates to being more than what you had between your legs at birth.
