I read the article and couldn't find any mention of how severely he beat the man, other than "to death." I've read of how easy it can be to kill someone with your fists, and how dangerous just being knocked unconscious is. We think of a guy pummeling for hours, but on the other extreme, it could have been as little as one well-placed punch to the back of the head.
