They’re either excluding men from being worthy of empathy or saying women are like children. Or both, of course.

Patriarchy means an encoded rule by (esp. ‘paternalistic’) men. Our society does not have this. To feminists, Patriarchy is a name characterising society as one-sided in favour of men over women, and that oppressed women but not men. A simplistic, dogmatic picture with men at the top, with an oppression arrow down onto women. Their main focus for this is that more men reach senior positions in politics and business, regardless of the fact this is very, very far from a rule and without ever being…

No, England executed about 500 witches total over the centuries. Scotland, while smaller, was more into it and killed a few thousand - the king of England that was most obsessed, James I, was Scottish. And the highest concentration by far was in southern Germany, where even some smaller cities like Bamberg saw witch executions number in the thousands.

It’s a bit more specific though. A particular subculture that has spread online with its own self-identification, jargon (‘Chads’, ‘femoids’, ‘Stacies’, etc.) and focuses its misogyny on blaming women for not having sex with them. Misogynists can come in other varieties, without having to stretch the definition the way many feminists do. I don’t think Henry VIII or a certain 7th century leader were incels, but they were certainly misogynists.

I truly thought Australia was the most based and normal of all major Anglophone countries. But then they literally have warnings about naming dead people in their academic papers on history, as though an Aborigine would be both reading those and surprised by that.

I’ve notice this is usually something that changes the moment it’s a man they’re attracted to. If it’s their boyfriend or husband there will often be actual anger (how dare you show any vulnerability/how dare you turn me off) - as though the man has done something deeply morally wrong - if they express the least wavering of confidence, let alone cry. This applies no matter how radical feminist and egalitarian they claim to be. Sadly, it requires introspection, and someone who joins a cult whose …

“[Members of ethnic group X] have a higher rate of violent crime and often target people like me, so when I see a group of them I cross over to the other side of the street”: racist. “Men have a higher rate of violent crime and often target people like me, so when I see a group of them I cross over to the other side of the street”: stunning and brave, this is other men’s problem to address, etc.

Fair, but there are definitely misandrists who hate straight men more than gay men because they see them more as a ‘creepy threat’ who might show sexual interest in them, where they see gay men as more ‘enlightened’, ‘female-friendly’ and above all ‘safe’. I’m not denying that the combination you’re talking about is common, but there are plenty who are the other way around.

I mean, misandrists who are themselves lesbian can probably compartmentalise an attribute they themselves have away from an attribute they don’t. They seem to be very enthusiastic about one and hate the other, at least the few I’ve met. By the same token, I don’t see why they’d go hand in hand in theory, except for a very broad feeling of ‘hate is hate’ - obviously bigotry of all sorts of wrong for the same basic reason, but there are obviously lots of different manifestations that don’t all go …

misandry and homophobia go hand in hand This sounds good as a general ‘hate one, hate them all’ sentiment but I’m not sure I quite buy this. There are lesbian misandrists who aren’t homophobic. They may hate gay men but because they’re men, not because they’re gay - and many actually hate straight men more.

It’s amazing how even 80% of the most hardcore feminist of straight women refuse point blank to approach a man. Some do of course but even then usually their idea of approaching would usually be criticised as too wimpish the other way. Example of this in dating apps: after years of complaining about men saying ‘Hi’, when most do better than that, vs. what women do on Bumble (and of course this is the whole reason that exists). Speaking with female friends there really is a very deep psychologica…

That’s very easy to say and probably the best route at a societal level, but it’s a massive sacrifice at an individual level that will lead to alienation and depression, except for those lucky few who have things ‘sorted’ already. It’s maybe not quite as extreme as ‘stop playing the corporate game and live in a field and hunt for berries’ but it’s a big one.

The fundamental question isn’t about point scoring between the genders as a whole. It’s: if you are born a man or woman and behave decently, what are you up against in life and from society? The gender of the perpetrators then isn’t the point. If I’m getting shot or having my head bashed in by someone, I don’t think “Oh but it’s another man so that’s OK”. Otherwise, we’d be pointing to who perpetrated the most female infanticide, etc. There is also the thorny issue of race, at least in the U.S. …

Right. And the idea it’s ‘for men too’ is ludicrous from the very name. An ideology that demands equality in language says a word that literally means ‘woman-ism’ is for men… Logic was never radical feminists’ strong suit. Though tbf some are blunter and more honest about it.

The reason men have problems is repeatedly dismissed with things like ‘feminism is for men too’, ‘men are just reacting because equality feels like oppression’, or ‘The reason for male suicide when being a guy is clearly so much better? Toxic masculinity!’
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates18/06/23 11:06 AM

It also implies that these negative traits are a ‘kind of masculinity’, rather than a kind of toxicity. Even ‘masculine toxicity’ might do more to imply the truth that there is also a ‘feminine toxicity’, which there most definitely is. ‘Toxic masculinity’ doesn’t make that clear. It might at least imply there’s a ‘non-toxic masculity’ - when men nod along and do whatever radical feminists say - but there’s nothing implying anything feminine can be toxic too, so all toxicity can be blamed on men…

Remember the genuine viral hashtags #KillAllMen, #MaleTears, and #MenAreTrash? The most innocuous statements are ‘red flags for bigotry and misogyny’ etc., but when it comes to those, it’s in fact bigoted for us not to actively find out what they’re about and educate ourselves. #ItsNotMyJobToEducateYou etc. We’re dealing with a mental illness of sorts here.

Well a 'sex change' is different from gender identity. Sounds like they only consider the former and use a biological definition in the law.

Gay marriage being legalised in 2017 isn't exactly unusual. Political machinations can take time and most Western countries only did this over the course of the 2010s, the first in 2005, so that's a pretty short window (to very young folks: yes, it is). It's hardly like Switzerland giving women the vote in 1971.

There are also very few matrilineal societies today - even among more primitive [substitute appropriate word here] cultures from the Amazon to the Kalahari to New Guinea. And basically no matriarchal ones. Anthropologists tend to be agnostic on the deep prehistory here. I can’t believe that it was argued ‘convincingly’.

according to you I did not say it logically implies all masculinity is toxic, I said it implies the (particular) masculinity in question (in whatever context) is toxic. But I still have a problem with this, as I explained in the ‘Frenchness’ example. Every instance of ‘all’ in your comment is not an actual counterpoint to what I said, but confusing the more subtle distinction I made with a basic logical error. I never claimed it implied ‘all’, just that the concept of ‘masculinity’ or any instan…

But I’m not implying all masculinity is toxic? I’m not claiming anything like “Saying ‘adjective + noun’ implies you think all [nouns] are [adjective]!” That would indeed be circular. My logic isn’t circular. My point is that in cases of masculine manifestations of toxicity, it is not the masculinity itself that is toxic, even if there can be masculine variety of toxicity. Equating the way there are different sorts of toxicity to different sorts of masculinity itself presupposes a lot. Please re…

I understand how adjectives work and I wouldn’t have a problem with ‘toxic man’. My point is it’s not the ‘masculinity’ itself that is toxic. There’s a key difference here. It’s like someone saying ‘That person is exhibiting evil Frenchness’ And then saying ‘Oh there are good kinds of Frenchness! See? Not racist!’ But even if the person in question was evil and happened to be in that group, and even if that manifested or expressed itself in a cultural way corresponding to that group, it’s not th…

On a less academic note, silly as it sounds it really bothers me that they refer to it as ‘toxic masculinity’ rather than ‘masculine toxicity’ - the former implies the masculinity is toxic or has toxic components, rather than that there are particular masculine and feminine strains of toxicity. And of course the denial of a feminine toxicity to go with it. Even more informally, there’s this. And not left wing but I found this hilarious.

The rest of my comment is in fact exactly addressing the question of rigour and the fact we can’t actually know that particular comparison for sure (and yet we keep getting told bullshit pop ‘factoids’ like ‘childbirth is 3.2 times more painful’), but that we do have evidence that women find the same neutral pain experiment…

Re your first point, to claim it’s always for reasonable reasons is simply untrue, and I’m sick of this blithe assumption that women are all smart and all reasonable and saintly and never change their minds - so counterexamples can’t possibly even exist. Re your second point, this is indeed not true of most airlines, but it is literally policy for some, eg Virgin Australia.

I sympathise with women going through childbirth, but I also very much doubt that something that we’ve literally evolved to do as a biological imperative (childbirth) is more painful than something we’ve evolved to see as painful because it should not be happening (e.g., kidney stones for either gender - men with a smaller hole - and being kicked in the balls). Women often want to have yet more babies. Only perverted guys have asked to be kicked hard in the balls even once. It’s very convenient …

In sum: After zillions of years of women selecting men who are taller, stronger, have leadership roles, and in modern terms a higher salary, adding massively more pressure for all this for them to have a hope of finding a partner and also simply pushing the underlying traits through sexual selection… Some more radical feminist women have now noted that statistically men tend to be taller, stronger, have leadership roles and in modern terms a higher salary. So I actually do get where they’re coming from. There is a lot of judgement that comes with being a single mother, often unfair, and there are plenty of jokes around, even if it’s not their fault and they’re actually raising the kids. On the other hand, assuming the fathers ‘failed as fathers’ is a bit rich too. Maybe. A lot are in prison, or just abandoned their kids, etc. But maybe not. Her new contribution is to repeatedly and explicitly demonise men as a whole over it. Concern trolling? On the contrary: it’s far harder to get reliable data on attempted suicides, as there are people who claim to do so falsely, some alleged attempts are more appeals for help set up to fail, and many people actually do try and fail without ever divulging this. This sets up all sorts of confusion even over definitions, let alone actually getting the data, which relies on surveys. A dead body on the other hand is very definitive, will be examined, especially if we’re talking about younger age groups…

I very rarely see any of the at least half-intelligent ones claim that women do it at a higher rate, as this is overwhelmingly contradicted by, well, all data. The first claim doesn’t even need to be debunked by their own logic, just show them any national or WHO data or papers from major journals and they’ll shut up. What I do see is sneaky derailing of the issue - eg, news articles about how suicide rates for women in India are the highest in the world (so closer to half rather than a quarter …

It depends how you define mass shooter but for the US, the FBI (which uses a minimum of 4 people shot, iirc) has quite a lot of data. For those with much higher death tolls you can check compilations online as there are fewer of them, and quite well known. It’s certainly overwhelmingly men. Let’s not be as unnuanced or unwilling to acknowledge the facts as extremist feminists here.

Yeah. Personally I have no problem with some number of Russian dissenters (with vetting) coming to my own country. But I think the special situation to remember here is that Estonia is a country of about 1.5 million with a lot of Russians already, maybe a third of that population, largely due to imperial- and Soviet-era relocations to Russify it. It’s not just taking a few refugees. Estonians don’t want another half million or more Russians to swarm in - a fraction of a % for Russia, for more fo…

The policy itself indeed relates to all Russian citizens, and in other cases she just says ‘Russians’ and ‘Russian citizens’. Maybe I’m being generous, but specifying men here - assuming this isn’t the translator - is just because the current question concerns men and she’s saying they aren’t an exception. This is possibly one of the factoids from an armchair psychologist that OP was referring to, but how much is this due to women being more likely to self-harm or appear to commit suicide - in a way where they are far more likely to be found by someone while still alive - as a cry for help? Because most cultures tend to value women’s pleas far more than men’s, and they do not grow up taught to be entirely independent at all costs. This ties in with having more support networks as mentioned, which …

Why would we expect those to be proportional? Say for some particular measure of propensity to violence, let’s say the male (approximately normal?) distribution is well to the right of the female one. Ok. Then for the cutoff where any abuse happens at all we may expect men to have a few times higher rate than for women, but for the cutoff where murder is the result we’d expect the ratio to be a few times that. As we get more extreme, the ratios drastically increase. And the chances of a blow del…
