Don't worry I totally get what you are saying, this state of depression and not feeling much is pretty much how I've lived my life for the past 3/4 years. A few months ago I had some sort of motivation spurt and since then I'm clinging to it as hard as I can. I'm motivated to give it a real try this time

Yep that's pretty much it for me too. While I didn't have the exact same problem regarding my education, it too stems from me looking to get compliments and appreciation from others. It is something I'll have to learn to separate from what I truly want to do.

It's an interesting point of view, and it does correlate with a lot, if not all, that has been said on this post yet. Although when you say that you don't let your feelings stop you from what you've chosen to do, I can't help but wonder how do you know you want to do it in the first place ? Aside from work and the like because you HAVE to do these things, rather the things you choose to do.

I do have a side of me that will keep on reminding me that I can't do it and it'd be best if I gave up entirely, but I started to work on myself for the past few months and I intend to give it the best try possible.

I did try once, it was a good experience. I think I might need to do it again in the coming days

Yeah I suppose that's how it has been. I didn't do it consciously though, I grew up like that. And growing out of it will indeed require some effort. If I don't succeed I'll probably end up complaining but people will have every right to not care

Sure, I like martial arts as a whole so I'll probably enjoy them to. I'll see if there are any clubs

Mostly kung-fu, both the combat and the tao sides. I also did boxing for 5 years, and I plan to get back to it soon.

Yeah I try to give myself small challenges like that once in a while. It's sometimes hard but it'll bring me to where I want to be slowly. Thank you again !

Yep, it's a sad truth. The whole point of my reply was to point out how easy it is to say "Be confident and you'll be fine" when you can't just wake up one morning and say "Ok today i'm confident". Since pretty much the start of puberty I put the whole "having a gf" aspect as one of the top priorities while I really shouldn't have. I have to learn to live for myself first

Thanks, it is a bit reassuring hearing that other people know what it's like. I can only hope to reach that state one day. For now, I'll see what I can do to better myself.

Some aspects of me I'm currently working on (like weight), others are a complicated process which I think would be easier to grasp with the help of a psychiatrist.

Well first let me thank you for your input ! It has helped as a whole but one thing you said has particularly made me think : "A date is to see if you like the other person rather than if she likes you". You could say that it's obvious, but my experience of getting to meet a girl I don't know is me immediately thinking "Will she like me ? How can I show her I'm a good guy? And other thoughts of the same kind" before even knowing if I like her. That is part of what frightens me about women: I alw…

That is indeed what I used to do, I often agree with people to avoid conflict or to try to get closer to them. This is becoming one of my objectives too, to try and defend my opinions more, even if it means going against others.

I mean when you mention old people who say things without giving a fuck, I immediately envision a old bitter person who the rest of his family sees as a bit/a lot annoying. Sure they don't care what others think of them, but I don't want to be that kind of person.

I did practise boxing for 5 years and that is probably the sport I prefer the most. I also saw on plenty occasions how ridiculous real fights actually are, but I can't help it, I'm afraid of any kind of confrontation, even though I'm fully aware there is no real risk.

Thank you for your input ! I'll answer point by point: 1) I've been overweight for a few years now and I started working on it for the last few months. To this day I've lost 26,5 lbs and I won't stop until I reached my goal, which is 180 lbs. I tried several times to join a gym, but I find working out to be really boring. That said, I'll join a swimming as soon as the inscriptions are open (2 more weeks) since I love swimming and it is known to be a great sport to get back in shape. 2) That's al…

I did compete a bit, I was the kung-fu France champion in my category in 2011 (I was 15 though). I love sparring and fighting in matches because it is expected of me to fight, it's in a controlled environment. It's fun and I'm kinda good at it. But I've never been in a real fight.

Right now I'm pretty content with what I have. I have a job, a nice appartment and friends. While i wish a could get a girlfriend, what I'm really struggling with is myself : I'm insecure and, even if that sounds edgy, I hate most of who I am.

I understand what you are saying, but, for me at least, it's not a rational fear. For example, I'm what you could call a pretty big guy: I'm 24, 6 feet tall, 220 lbs and I spent most of my life practising martial arts, yet whenever there is a risk of a physical confrontation, I panic, the only thing on my mind is "OH GOD DANGER ABANDON THE SHIP" even if the guy in front of me is smaller and less physically threatening than I am. That even happened to me when a lone guy confronted me surrounded b…

Exactly ! Although I also have to be honest the need for affection and love is also a part of the reason why I want a gf. I assume pretty much every human being also does.

I can see how confidence could be like that, sure. Still what you described is most of what I'm struggling with right now. I'm pretty much scared of everything I'm not familiar with.

I have friends and although I wish to have a girlfriend it's not a "need". I don't obsess over sex or the idea that I have to get a girlfriend to fit in the idea of success. I just wish to experience what it is like.

So as you describe it, confidence would be some sort of sense of constant serenity ?

Sure, I'll read it. I did try and read "No more Mr. Nice Guy" but stopped about halfway in because while there was some truth to it I wasn't completely into it. On the matter of how men should be (without hesitation, etc), this might be naive of me, but I keep wondering why it has to be that way. Why should we have to constantly keep moving forward, trying to be the best you can be, etc. Can't we just enjoy life as it is ? I don't have much ambition, I'm just looking out for any potential proble…

Look I appreciate the time you took to write this and you wanting to help. Also, this whole thing about being confident and all must be true since pretty much every post giving dating advice is about being confident. But I feel like I'm not the only one thinking that this is something I'm not capable of, and even if I was, it'd be way too much work for me. So I think it'd be best if I just give up and stay single. Honestly, for people like me, this post is more depressing than it is inspirationa…

I get what you are feeling, even though it's not on the same thematics. There are several points that I would like to discuss: 1) They are med STUDENTS. Nothing wrong with that, on the contrary, but that's what they are. Students. So probably not a lot of money and potentially student loans. Sure they might earn a lot of money later on, but not right now. 2) Sure, you might think your situation is not the best right now, but from what I read, you have a plan. You want to improve your life and yo…

Maybe it's more of a "I need to be perfect to be worthy of love" type of thought that should be dropped. And that's what's hard imo.

It's fine, again, I commented on your post just to point at how one can forget how hard it is sometimes for some people to gain confidence. It can't be reduced to just wanting to be confident or focusing on what you are good at. I think it revolves both on how you perceive yourself and how you perceive others. Still, I agreed on the rest of your post, and even I make a bit of a ruckus on this point, confidence remains a major part in attractiveness. Thanks for your replies

Well that's the thing: I already have a job which I'm kinda good at and I have friends and family who are all really supportive. Still, I'm not confident. At all. That goes for any of my interactions with people I don't know (not only women) or anything I want to do. It's fine though, I learned to live with that, I'm not trying to gain any pity from this. I just want to point out how easy it is to say "be confident", when the issue is much more complex than that.
/r/seduction26/06/20 02:20 PM

Yes, but maybe not in the way you'd think. I 100% agree on the fact that you should talk to women like how you'd talk to regular people since they ARE regular people. But I have to confess that I'm beyond tired of seeing the usual "jUsT bE cOnFideNt". As I see it, confidence is something you naturally have or don't have. When I hear "be confident" as an answer to "How to be attractive to girls ?", it's like if I asked "How do I lift a car ?" and was answered "Easy, you just grab it and put it ov…

Nah, too hard. I'll just keep on being an awkward, sad and socially inept single guy. Comfort zone is best zone
