Unfortunately this is not the case in most states. Typically "maternity leave" is 6 weeks and it is almost always unpaid. That is almost enough time for a mother to recover physically from the demands of pregnancy and delivery, and originally probably had nothing to do with bonding of the baby, etc. In the USA our societal views of paid time off to care for an infant are seriously outdated. Most women are forced to use their vacation and sick time. Having a baby is neither.
