I'm from Malaysia. Most young people don't follow tradition anymore, we're post-modernised. I don't see the appeal as well. They're arbitrary and tedious, I'd much rather just freely do things. If you want a friend, try joining a club, or finding employment in a place filled with natives, they'd most likely just be like your friends in the West though, so nothing special really.

Use the LRT or MRT and go to a random non tourist spot and just walk around and absorb the local atmosphere. Go out for at least 5 hours a day.
