I believe the way it works is that offenders have the option to do that in order to get a reduced sentence. Regardless, I don't think this should happen to anyone, because I would consider it to be cruel and unusual punishment.

I don't think a 15 minute dinner needs to be expressly communicated, the fact that he's coming to render aid in the first place is already nice of him. What would be basic human decency is thanking someone for taking the time out of their day to come and help you instead of acting like an entitled jerk.

He got the text while he was in the driveway. He stopped to eat for 15 minutes, then took about a 20 minute drive to the location. So that's about 35 minutes in total. Even if it was an hour, he still came out to help. There just happened to be someone passing by that could help sooner.

15 minutes is slightly less than average to eat a full meal, he hurried a little to make sure he got there. Screw her idea of her man, instead of being thankful he left his parents' house after his day of work to come and help her, she wants to complain about how he's slightly late. There's definitely questions regarding the ethics of that. By that logic, hanging is even cheaper than that. These newer methods were adopted because they're considered more humane. The constitution protects people from cruel and unusual punishment.

But at least they can be released and be provided some form of compensation. Compared to the death penalty, you can't reverse that. "Barbaric" is definitely relative, some people would say that death would be an easy way out for people who were accused of such heinous crimes. I'd rather opt for the punishment that has at least some way of exonerated innocent people who have been convicted.

Everyone should still have the right to appeal though. The death penalty already demands the highest burden of proof, beyond a reasonable doubt. Despite that, mistakes still happen. Once the death penalty has been served, there is no way to appeal, or reverse the sentence in light of exculpatory evidence. Hence, why it's barbaric.
