You're right in that people know that rape is wrong. But you have to remember that not everyone may share your definition of rape. Maybe their preconceived notion is that it's violent, or forced, and that if your student flirts with you then surely it's not rape and just a bit of fun right?

It absolutely baffles me when I see people still so vehemently defending her. Like, did you look at the evidence? If so, how can you possibly still believe her

I'm australian but I'm sending my support! This thing should be pinned to the top of the sub. I believe it's one of the most important things we should be fighting for right now.

I thought so too for a minute until I figured it out! The post was about false accusations and feminists who are close to the victims personally, so the reply could have easily referred to either.

I think it'd be great to have a site dedicated to jumping on misinformation as soon as it crops up and debunk smear campaigns with facts and evidence.

sigh they require you to be a member of the american health organisation. Seeing as I'm Australian I'm not too keen to do that (don't even know if I can), can anyone help out with a copy?

Heard on the radio earlier that he ended up resigning. Poor guy.

Quite possible, but I'd consider it easier to train someone's sale skills than teach them a language.

Also I forgot about this but I may as well mention it! I was actually in Vietnam this time last year teaching, and it was a really nice holiday. Students and teachers brought the female teachers flowers, and there was a big emphasis on thanking your wives, mothers, etc. I'm not sure whether they do the same for men's day, but the overall atmosphere of the day over there was what I'd want both holidays to be like.

He didn't say some women. By arguing that banning women from the gym would solve this problem, he's implying the problem exists with the entire female gym going population.

[men could work out] without someone there in skimpy Barbie clothes who's just there to get attention and be stared at. by being surrounded by whoreish women in their JUICY and skin tight stuff
/r/MensRights08/03/15 12:11 AM

That's not it. He's generalising the whole group of women who use the gym as whorish attention seekers. It's pretty much the same as a woman saying she wants a ladies only time so she can get away from all the roid raging men everywhere.

I wasn't trying to use it that way specifically, in fact it occurred to me people might see it that way. I personally wanted it to be about my first point, talking about the women who we value, because it's a rare conversation here that's pretty appropriate to have for the day. I'll probably do something similar for international men's day, if no one else does. The part about using it later was just an off hand comment that I hoped would get more people on board if they were still unconvinced by…

I called a guy out yesterday who garnered about 150 Upvotes with a comment about women only going to the gym to be whorish and wearing skimpy clothing for attention. There can definitely be instances of some harsh misogyny here. It was bound to happen with the growth the sub has seen

To be honest I haven't experienced an international Women's day since I became more aware of social issues so this one coming will be my first experience with what the media is like.

She sounds great! Sacrifice is something I forgot to mention, and I think a lot of people underestimate how much their mothers (and fathers) can sacrifice for them growing up.

Wow, thank you so much! I had no idea it'd get supported like that. This means a lot!

Regardless of whether or not we should be allowed to be angry, we have a bad rep in the public eye. Until that changes we can't give anyone ammo when they say we're all misogynists who hate women. Feminism is big enough and accepted enough to be able to get away with hate relatively unscathed in the public eye.

Yes, I'll row in all the bodies of water in the middle of bloody no where in Australia.

Thank you. And with international Women's day coming up in a day or two, I think certain feminist media will be looking to paint us in a worse light than usually as something that's "plagued" women, and I honestly think we should embrace the holiday and show everyone how much we love the women in our lives who are important to us.

The cardio comment was just a side to my real gripes with your comment so yeah, fair enough. Jogs are good and all but I enjoy using the rowing machine at the very least in my gym, is that frou frou? Anyway, your opinion may not represent the sub, but the 100+ Upvotes show that more people agreed with you than disagreed with you, at least assuming they Upvote and downvote accordingly.

frou frou machines Because guys never want to do cardio right? skimpy Barbie clothes who's just there to get attention and be stared at. whoreish women in their JUICY and skin tight stuff. What the fuck. I was actually shocked at how many Upvote this has. What does that say about the state of this sub? I though we prided ourselves on "people hear bad things about us, and see that it's all wrong when they visit". Do we really want people seeing shit like this as a popular sentiment of the sub? I …

you put it very nicely. I respect someone's choice to focus on womens issues (which do genuinely exist), just as I'd want them to respect my choice to focus on mens issues.

I don't think time ever actually suggests or wants words banned, it's just a snazzy way of talking about the most disliked words of the year.

From my experience there, most aren't vocally against, a few identify as MRA's, and a few more offer some support without fully identifying under the banner.

I'm not American so could someone clarify some of this for me? I've heard plenty of times you can lose your right to vote, be fined and jailed if you don't sign up. Now, are these possibilities or is it definite? I've read that they can fine you, does it happen often? Likewise, can they stop you from voting if they want or do they stop you?

fantastic speech. This is the first I've seen of Erin but with all the amazing work she's done she seems like a very level headed and passionate ally to have.

Could you link something a bit more specific? Maybe one of her articles? I had a decent look and I couldn't really find anything where she talked about how they oppose the model, but I'm quite interested in seeing that.

I can see what you mean, yeah. I think my main problems are 1. It says most prostitutes don't want to be doing the job, and want to get out. Which is something which I think should actually be approached, and 2. They don't distinguish at all between the truly bad ones, the traffickers and exploiters who abuse the women, and the people who use it like a normal service who do no harm. They're all lumped into one group under the logic that all people who hire prostitutes are somehow violent abusers…

I've noticed a trend with high profile people stating they don't identify as feminists, and that is they get absolutely SLAMMED by feminists, and ironically enough, quite often with very vitriolic messages. I saw one on facebook talking about Ms Bishop that was something like "Stupid fucking bitch wouldn't be where she is if it wasn't for us. Cunt". Stuff like that leaves me speechless, like...do they not see why behaviour like that IS what drives people away?
/r/MensRights02/11/14 10:01 AM

I gotta agree with the other guy on this one. He was one of the very few people in the video who's behaviour was legitimately creepy. There's no need to argue that absolutely every single guy in the video was innocent in their behaviour

I don't know why you've been down voted so much. I mean, I disagree but throughout the thread I've been reading your points have been fair and reasonably sensible. Remember people, don't down vote judt because you disagree. Potpot is not trolling, they aren't breaking the rules. If you disagree just dont Upvote and voice your reasoning if necessary. Don't turn the sub into an echo chamber, debate is healthy.

You're welcome to object. Intra-movement discussion and criticism is necessary to maintain integrity of the movement, I believe.

Being a dick is everybody's right. Oh I do agree with you there, which is why I feel it's right they're allowed to keep the name, but having the right doesn't prevent people from calling you out on being a dick, which is what OP did.

I disagree. I'd treat a female team choosing "man-hating she demons" just the same. It's not about trying to stop people being offended, it's about stopping unnecessary rudeness and unkindness to others. I mean, what does naming a team "He man woman haters" accomplish? It's not satirical, or if it is I can't tell. I'd be hard pressed to accept it has any comedic value either. And if it's "freedom of expression", what are they really expressing...? I don't see it I'm afraid.

I'm not sure, are you positive that's the way it is? It seems bizarre that a law could be written allowing it to be rape when no communication was made that said they wanted to stop.

So do you seriously think someone should be charged with rape after a partner revokes consent during the act and decides not to actually tell you this?

I'm yet to decide how I feel on the matter, but I'm not sure I would support prosecution. Can you imagine taking someone home, and it felt like everything went right and she was enthusiastic and agreeing to everything, only to later find out she felt like she was being coerced and actually didn't consent at all? Would you feel like a rapist? On a logical level, the only difference between normal sex, and rape, is a lack of consent in the latter which is entirely dependent on how one partner is t…

I'm aware it's not always possible to tell when someone isn't ACTUALLY into it when they genuinely seem into it. That's why caution needs to be taken when deciding whether a "rape" has happened or not. I believe it's quite possible for someone to "accidentally" rape someone. That is, for all intents and purposes you think the person is consenting, all signs point towards it, but in their mind they aren't consenting. I think cases like that shouldn't be prosecuted but it's a very touchy and grey …

It doesn't make jt much better but I think you misread the example! The girl does get 2 toys, but they aren't ones taken from the boy, they're just 2 new ones.

I don't think it's as bad as you're making out. In an ideal case, consent would be withdrawn clearly and verbally but I know from past relationships that sometimes isn't possible. I'm talking literal panic attacks where she couldn't speak. I know that's not a common thing, and that this system could be abused, but I feel like they did the right thing by including it, otherwise people could easily say "she didn't say stop", when every other piece of body language under the sun was screaming stop.
