Infuriating. Its like looking for a fish up a tree, the logic is so backwards and yet they're so close at the same time...🤦‍♂️

Ah im not in Australia - but its always nice to meet a fellow psych student interested in this topic. It is so under researched, or the research that is there gets pushed aside or dismissed. Even worse, some research still puts the onus on male victims for the issues they face. But yeah, all the best on your journey, we need more people who understand these issues and can make a difference from the inside.

That article was really interesting and shocking. Im in the area of research on male victims of IPV (has a huge crossover with suicidality so I'm interested in that and mens mental health as well) and this was a helpful reference. Its insane how society and policies continuously twist the narrative to completely avoid recognising men as vulnerable and/or victims.

35 yo trans dude here and same. Couldn't accept myself for damn near 23 years cause of this. Actively hated and rejected it, which I understand now as internalised misandry (strange how that happened even tho i was born female). Also - I still struggle with it so much which is why im here and find these spaces help a lot, and ive had to started letting go of feminist spaces and some mates who hold strictly feminist views for my own sanity. What drives me nuts is no one seems to realise men have …

Even so if they were all dumb, Kens were just dumb-er... i noticed a clear differentiation between the Kens and the Barbies in that way - Barbies were still portrayed as being smarter, more independent, able to work cohesively together, more empowered, etc.

You're so off the mark I cant even, I dont know where to begin tbh. Everything you just said - and yet no one is fighting to keep men home, to stop sending them to their deaths. No one is fighting to end male victimisation of violence. And youve basically proved the point - all of those acknowledgements glorify "brave men who fought for their country" - how about "fucked up system that killed millions of men and shows men are disposable but no-one else is". Its men who are drafted, and people ac…

Yet your comment was suggesting why female victims are acknowledged and not the men who are dead. So yes, this is the point. Neither experience of being a war victim is worse than the other, but male victims are routinely ignored, thats just basic knowledge, even though they represent a disproportionate majority. Its insane and we see this everywhere. Male victims of IPV are completely forgotten about and actively repressed and blamed, so regardless, there is a disparity there in terms of recogn…

"I often say that the male and female sides of gender inequality are deeply interconnected, and this is a good illustration of that. If we want fewer poor women, we need fewer dead men. We also need a society where men do not carry most of the burden of being the family breadwinner, and women are less financially dependent on them — these are not two separate problems, but two sides of the same problem." this hit, i totally agree. Particularly the second bit - to be mutually protective and respo…

In IPV research - Johnsons Typology which basically in the original papers suggested women are the overwhelming majority of DV victims, and that men were the basically full majority of perpetrating severe coercive control and dominance such as intimate terrorism. Since then, I believe it was Hines who used the same typology but on a sample of male victims and a population based sample of men and found the exact opposite. Essentially, the paper found evidence that showed johnsons typology does no…

Fuckin' stupid is what they are. Sorry but man have they been flogging that dead horse for too long. Theres just no way that femininity and masculinity can be toxic in themselves, these are neutral traits, but people can internalize harmful narratives about their gender which turns into some form of pathology about it. They're all just defense mechanisms from being brainwashed into specific stereotypes no one really fits into.

"Because in society we are taught that only girls deserve protection" - this is the one that gets me, and the one that caused so much grief when I had to let go of it. Its woven into the very fabric of society and I just want to be deserving of protection and my life inherently cared about regardless of what gender I am.

Well done for speaking out about something that didnt sit right in your gut. I know its hard when you receive pushback - ive received a lot of pushback - but ultimately I always come away feeling relieved that I stuck to what I felt was right. Misandry does exist, and we need to keep calling it out if we want to start making a difference. Ps. I didn't deal with it really - it caused trauma which led me to reject who I am for most of my life. But once I began doing more research into boys and mens issues and advocating more for them, that started to change things internally. Im doing my masters thesis on helpseeking challenges of male IPV victims and the whole process has changed a lot inside me. Do I think the landscape will change? I don't know, but its hard to think about it progressing and getting worse.

I grew up as a feminist (f) in a feminist household and I have since abandoned that label after transitioning (m). I internalised so much misandry I wanted to off myself, and I was told that even that was men's (and my own) fault. Feminism is inherently exclusive, the claim that it is equality is not what is built into the fabric of the definition, nor is it how people act in its favour. Whats hard for me is what people assume when I say im not a feminist - ive not abandoned equal rights for wom…

Yeah true but my point was it shouldnt be brushed off as a benign genetic component. Men are at much higher risk from having violence inflicted - even when they themselves are not violent, and that should be taken seriously. There is way too much dismissal of men's safety regardless of where the danger is coming from - women (ipv), men (general violence and ipv), workplace dangers, suicide, mortality rate, homelessness, substance abuse, military conscription, etc, etc, etc.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates24/06/26 10:39 AM

This one gets me too. I was born female and was taught all those thigs but as a dude im way more terrified of violence. Rightly so too, statistically speaking. (Not tryna say women shouldn't be afraid too, its just nuts that we are taught women are the ones who should be afraid when men are actually in more danger there).

All good points however.. "Today an average boy faces similar structural pressures around economic mobility, education, workplace risks, and policy impacts as an average girl" -this is not true, gender does impact these things on ground level.. so though class is the overarching issue, once you zoom into a class bracket, gender plays a factor in many ways, just not in the one-sided narrative we hear all the time. The gender thing is perhaps a secondary factor to the overarching class power dynam…

Yep, I really noticed this when I began research for my masters thesis last fall (looking at male victims/survivors of IPV and helpseeking challenges). Ive got a bit to say, so warning this might be long: I noticed any time i tried to research stats on male victims, it would feed me female victims over and over and say that male victimisation wasnt an issue. I essentially ended up having arguments with it where eventually it would slowly recognise what I was talking about and relent to showing m…

How do they know autistic men get coddled or not, theyre not autistic men, all they can know is experiences of autistic women. And its so frustrating because I hear autistic men say all the time how much they mask and fight to survive - its just not in the same way that women do... but no... this must mean being coddled and privileged. I get SO frustrated by this one because im an autistic trans man so i see through that bs and it's just dehumanising.

I just watched this 2 days ago, and I very literally had every single thought you mentioned (as did my housemate who caught the second half of it with me). Nothing to add but the excuses were shocking - saying things like 'shes just being a protective mum as she should be'. I just dont get it, nowhere in a million years would that narrative be used if this was a father. Basically every single person looked the other way, gave her the benefit of the doubt and treated the whole situation like she …

Ive noticed this in IPV research across the board. Male perpetrators are documented as inherently violent and need to be criminalized whereas female perpetrators are documented as needing help and care. This stuff has deep roots.

There are outliers in every demographic/community. Or maybe you never noticed it or you internalised these issues in a different way or somehow didnt internalise them at all. Who knows but like yeah, men overwhelmingly deal with emotional abuse and neglect since birth. I grew up female but I had all male friends and grew up in male spaces and I internalised the same narrative about boys/men just by constantly being around them. Also its worth to note - you say there are ways around it. While tha…

Im annoyed they still had to shoehorn the manosphere, toxic mysogyny, and "boys should just pull their socks up and work harder to catch up to their female counterparts" ....but at least this is a national discussion that had some otherwise good messages.

Yeah ive encountered this narrative and id say this is blatant sexism. Men are devalued when they have feelings, theyre devalued when they dont have feelings. Its a lose-lose game that is unique to men and its fkin traumatizing.

How to construct a unidimensional picture with exactly one brain cell. Let's not forget the literal "kill all men" craze that went viral, mostly perpetuated by women. Or the women telling male suicide risks (one of the leading killers of men) to kill themselves to better the world. So no its not that simple.

Well i got the first paragraph but Im pretty sure im not understanding the second paragraph you wrote (sorry). I do agree that mens rights movements need to be more proactive in their fight for their rights. Id love to see more published work, protests, articles, and people talking about these issues. What you're not getting is that most are not dunking on feminism - unfortunately there are a lot of systemic issues that disaffect men that many feminists dismiss, or even perpetuate. Criticizing a movement that gaslights an entire demographic by saying their issues dont exist seems a pretty fair and significant part of this whole thing. And im not even trying to excuse those who DO shit on feminism for the sake of it - its not "us vs them" and its not okay to do that. But much of feminism is no…

No i wasnt aware of that, ill have a look. Yeah I even found papers that showed men experiencing unidirectional violence at higher rates. And unfortunately even though the argument states that men dont experience as much fear or effects from the abuse, there is evidence showing the development of ptsd/cptsd to be no different between female and male vicitms.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Andreia Machado - she wrote a handbook and many papers on male victims of IPV and how hard it is for them to recognise abuse, be believed if they do, or get help.

Thanks for this list. There are many academic papers as well reflecting the issues of male victims/survivors being left behind, you just need to dig to find them (one of the issues in and of itself). I think one of the sources you linked to (Dr. Elizabeth Bates) wrote one or two of the papers I am looking at right now. Im not sure if im misinterpreting something, or if the comments are catching something im not, but this is what I took from it - Male loneliness isn't just about romantic relationships, its about people on a widespread level not caring about mens emotions, not really hearing or seeing them as humans, and not acknowledging their struggles. Loneliness doesn't always mean lack of social interaction, it can be lack of care, concern and understanding from people, systems, institutions, etc. Being see…

Yeah for sure, and thats a reason I feel bad for a lot of boys now because this is what theyre trained for as if its normal and okay? They shouldn't have to be trained for this, this is pure trauma fuel. No wonder men struggle.

Oh hey sorry, I also wanted to say that I naturally never identified as a feminist either, always as an egalitarian. I think its because I knew deep down I wasnt truly one of the ones it benefitted, and I internalized all of the misandry that existed within it. I also agree with the sentiments on feminism having done good, and also having done harm. Sadly I shut my mouth for most of my life so I could be accepted in those spaces.

Trans masc person here. Its not just the loneliness. Not 2 months into passing consistently as male i was jumped (along with my cis buddy) by 3 guys and 2 girls in a car. The person I tried to run to for help didnt want to help me. The police officers at the hospital didnt care because "ah its just guys getting beaten up" and my buddy's dad said "why did you want to transition, this is the life youve signed up for". Yes mostly i think - however queer men also face violent physical violence perpetrated by family/community, on top of the violence by law. I get your point and no one is trying to one up anyone (at least i hope not, because "queer women dont deal with violence" should not be the takeaway). Reporting on severity of an issue is just what it is. Especially because the disparity they pointed out in the post has significant societal and social implications and violence against men in general is compl…

Ah hold on I took your last comment a bit skewed - and thats basically what I was trying to say that the laws against queerness tend to overwhelmingly disaffect and target queer men. Queer women have historically been overlooked. I didnt say the west was the same and I wasnt saying social contracts were the same either. But even socially, im pretty sure on a whole men have historically experienced more violence for their queerness. Its a different kind of violence but its still brutal. Women and…

Uhm...they just kill the gay men a lot of the time and physically brutalize them? As a former lesbian I never feared for my life as much as i did until I was seen as a queer man. Its widely known that male homosexuality is way more brutalized than female homosexuality, even with the facts you stated. Within western and non-western cultures. So they absolutely do try to control male sexuality, but they do by eliminating or brutalizing those who dont comply.

I get what youve been saying and thats true but I havent seen much of that rhetoric here. Equally ive seen a lot of womens spaces constantly assume that men are stupid in a whole other way (emotionally mostly which encompasses a large facet of human experience). I think most people here are angry BECAUSE they know none of us are stupid so the refusal to take any responsibility, make exuses for misandry, and whatever else makes it even worse in a way and more frustrating to deal with.

This. And I'll add another layer on to it - thats even just talking about the men who ask for or search for help and express their pain. The ones who dont have developed such intense masks and avoidance with their own pain and grief and emotions because they were shamed out of it since birth. Thats trauma and disconnection from self. I dont like the way "toxic masculinity" has been used to dehumanize men in stead of refrain what is happening to them on a societal level. When a guy shuts down, ca…

It is systemic in wider society. Schools, legal system, mental health sphere all disaffect boys and men. Not to mention men are dissaffected most in terms of homelessness, drug/alcohol issues, suicide, deaths in the workplace, incarceration and violence. I dont see it as a one sided issue anymore. trans-masc person here who has medically transitioned and is perceived now as a man. This is absolutely spot on to my experience and I just addressed a similar comment on another post the other day speaking about this.
