Where I am, common law is slightly less common than marriage. In a neighboring region its more common because of religious reasons (a historic pattern of no divorcing). This kind of ruling varies from region to region and is on the downslide. Alimony payments are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. Plus, I think there is some merit to the idea that a woman gives up some time to the business making and keeping babies alive instead of pursuing career or self-betterment opportunities.
