To be fair, I misread as well and had the same reaction.

Could you like a partner who is bald? Even if you normally didn’t like that? Try not to preoccupy yourself with one thing another person might overlook. Playing nonstop defense keeps anyone from getting close.

Much appreciated - perhaps post a notice in this sub as well for those of us who aren’t on Twitter

I would have liked the opportunity to review any questions I got wrong so I could learn something new, though it was nice to find out where I fit in the general population. Really cool questions

Don’t forget addiction - that’s a biggie

Be having fun and enjoying yourself. Be inviting of others to join you in having fun and enjoying themselves. If they are enjoying themselves, be open about any attraction you feel toward them. Be okay with them not reciprocating, but also be okay if they do reciprocate. Won’t get you laid every time, but it’ll make it easier for them to say “yes”, you’ll at least have taken your shot.

I honestly think this is 10/10 advice - for everyone really. If you’re looking for some rules around dating (e.g. because rules can help a person feel more secure with a game-plan), this is really solid.

That could easily be a contributing factor as well

Not sure what to tell you - I like trying new things. If you don’t like learning new skills and only want to stick with what you already enjoy, then what I do to meet new women isn’t gonna work for you.

I think that’s one reason you see dancing suggested so much - it’s something physical.

Pick a new hobby where groups are likely to be at least mixed-gendered (e.g. dance classes). Go to the groups and really just try to enjoy learning something new. Radiate positive energy because I’m already having fun and feeling confident from learning something challenging. Use that confidence boost to actually meet new people, starting with the people I’m not attracted to if I’m still feeling self-conscious. Perks are 1) Already happier and more confident because of the new hobby 2) I can pac…

So I watched the video, and I’ll leave just two criticisms. 1) Like many laypeople, Mr. Grace interprets and generalizes the findings in such a way that no serious social scientist (at least one not trying to publicize a new book) would do. What he does get most correct is his statement about science being at its best where it shows us the limits of our knowledge. By example, 2) an equally reasonable interpretation of the data is that 4 1/2 months (T1 to T2) isn’t a large enough time span to see…

Well then I’m not sure there actually is much of a difference between androgynous and undifferentiated - just the passion of their passions. You could say that androgynous people are interested in things that are typically gendered, and they might experience some consequences for their cross-gendered interests. I could see how that would be a thing. Just about any bisexual will tell you they get a strikingly different reaction from the people around them based on the gender of their current part…

So, just to make sure I understand… Guns/historical warfare/journaling/decorating personal items. If someone strongly preferred OR disliked all of those items then they would be scored as “androgynous”, whereas if they felt neutral about all of them they would score as “undifferentiated.” Is that correct?

One other thing, also circling back… Wiki says the alpha coefficient for women is lower than for men among the test items. It could be that you are correctly eyeballing a greater variance in women’s test scores than men’s because that’s what usually happens with this test. If so, congrats. I think you might be better at seeing patterns in data than I am :)

Well, while it’s been a while since I studied two-factor modeling, the link you gave me is a pretty straightforward description of how they came up with the inventory. Basically, someone spent lots of time in SPSS with a dataset. They identified items that moved together according to their proposed two “hidden” factors, and chose the items that showed the biggest differences in response to form their inventory. That’s a good first step - but the most respected inventories also go through all sor…

I’ll defer to your experience about the population here since you clearly have more than I do :) I guess if I were to come up with my own theory about selection pressures using PPD, I would guess that the “combative” nature of the sub attracts particular types of men and women to the sub. I would also guess you’d get different results on different platforms - Facebook being and obvious alternate to me. As for the sexuality metaphor, I didn’t mean for it to be taken so literally. What I meant was…

Re why the women occupy more space: I would be cautious about assuming that without using some statistical tests first. Even median values and standard deviations would be useful. More than once I’ve thought I’ve seen a difference in results on a scatterplot and found out that (statistically) there wasn’t a significant difference. I’m genuinely not sure there’s a significant difference in their variance here, let alone what the size would be if there was. Still, informally speaking, if there is …

M:104 F:103 - Just barely androgynous. I am a 40 year-old male. I have a background in psychology, and I liked this test. The questions were certainly provocative in the sense that I have to really think about what they are measuring, but I can tell they are trying to measure something concrete. I’d definitely be interesting in the published psychometrics for this test, but if it was originally developed in the 70s, who knows if those psychometrics even exist. Thanks Grid, this was fun

Believe me, I am under no illusions about how many poor therapists there are out there. I’m not interested in giving those therapists any more work. However, what I can do for OP is better arm them to recognize a good therapist when they find one. Therapy is a bit of a strange profession because it is both a professional service and one where the full range of human emotion can be part of the treatment. If OP has a plan to handle what is for them a difficult topic, and some idea of what a proper…

Therapist here - When I am with a client, I definitely have a “work hat” that I am wearing, and it applies to nearly all our interactions. If a client asked me, “what are your opinions on men?” (or some similarly weighty political topic), my very first curiosities would be about how the question reflected their needs, fears, and other reasons why people seek out a therapist. A discussion about gender politics can be very fun, but it’s not why people seek out therapists, nor is it what therapy ac…

Feminism as a whole is certainly advocating wide societal and gender dynamic change. The temperance model, the disease model, the determinants of health, the Portuguese model... these all reflect advocacy efforts for wider societal change on how we treat addiction. So does decriminalization and legalization. Perceiving a societal harm and advocating steps against that harm doesn’t invalidate the position. The more controversial takeaway is that “it might not always be desirable to discourage wom…

I’ll give this a shot. Firstly, some feminism does a disservice blahblahblah... More importantly, I believe there is an argument to be made that, even when we are fully aware of of the potential drawbacks of a behaviour, the impact can be so insidious that we suffer them anyway. A valid parallel might be subsatnce addiction. Virtually no current addict failed to be aware they were ingesting an addictive substance. Pot, cigarettes, alcohol, meth, oxy, whatever... They probably knew people get add…

Generally speaking, I would argue that you can’t get to softer feelings (e.g. grief) without being able to go through harder feelings (e.g. anger). Once the anger has been expressed and accepted, then you can begin to unpack pain, letting it go, and moving on. I’m not an RPer (or a BPer really), but I can appreciate that people need a safe place to express their anger before they can process their feelings and move on productively with their life. And a common way to express that anger - particu…

Too late to this party, but I really wanted to think about my answer before I gave it. Here is what I came up with: I believe what both men and women end up craving and fantasizing about is closely related to whatever defies their expectations. I believe that best explains how we can generally accurately predict what's going to happen to us in our romantic lives, and how we can fail so miserably at finding happiness despite having so many good ideas. We fantasize about what we don't expect to se…

I believe these are similar to arguments women were hearing in the 70s about why they shouldn't integrate with men's universities, or dorms, or why they shouldn't abolish the curfew. As Camille Paglia put it (paraphrasing), "they told us we were inviting ourselves to get raped more, and we told them we felt freedom was worth it." I suppose that's a choice that can be left up to each individual person.

I'm a therapist by trade (a damn good one too), so reading nonverbals is a big part of what I do. Having said that, there are some therapists I know (all of them women) who are almost in a different league when it comes to empathy/intuition. Here is what I've observed. These other therapists? They could take a scrambled egg and pour it wholeback into its shell. They'll work for years with victims of the most horrific abuse and accomplish amazing results. They have what seems like infinite patien…

Your position fails because we are not dealing with absolutes. (Obligatory "only a sith..." joke.) We can argue both affirmative consent and teaching people to seek and understand consent because both approaches might help reduce the incidence of rape. Similarly, we can argue against both approaches because they might come with unfortunate consequences. And even if we held fast to one approach or the other, it's incredible to the point of disbelief that we'd eliminate rape altogether. The proble…

This is one of the few subs I come across where people with a diversity of opinions and experiences engage each other in a respectful and substantive way - as the norm! Yes, for me it is genuinely about listening to other people.

Seriously, take a break, and come back only if you think you'd like to. Embracing your limits makes you a more effective person overall. It helps you make wiser choices, and helps you find balance in your life. That's even more important when you're emotionally invested in what you're doing. Take a break - it's the courageous thing to do.

Not entirely true. Don't have the sources in front of me, but in two very large (n equals about 9000 each) studies of a) heterosexual men and b) men who have sex with men, they found that depression caused decreases in both sexual interest and functioning for most subjects, but a significant proportion (15-20%) had the opposite response. For most men, depression decreases sex drive and ability, but for a significant number it heightens instead. I was doing research on services for treating sex a…

At best it's artistic hyperbole. At worst it's thinly veiled resentment and bitterness. In reality, people are often silly and there's an art to intuiting when and how to take them seriously.

I've got a strange idea, but I think it has legs. If we truly want equality and equity between the sexes, we should incentivize men leaving the workforce.
