The threat is not the risk of bodily injury but the intent of an ssailant to do you harm. So while the assailant is vastly weaker in this situation they continue to pose a threat and have proven themselves as one when the assaulted you with spit. The reasonable use of force is the minimum amount of force necessary to get the assailant to stop being a threat, aka knocking them unconcious.

You have the right to stop them from being a threat. So knocking someone out with your fists would be acceptable but continueing to beating them after they have gone limp would not. It comes down to whether or not a reasonable person would do what you did to stop themselves from further harm. Retaliating by cutting someones throat because they spat on you is not reasonable nor is bashing in their head with a hammer. So he incapacitated an assailant who was bringing him bodily harm it doesnt matter that she could have been brain damaged based on his response so long as his response was onky to incapacitate the threat. Blood is commonly found in saliva as well but it doesnt matter the assault could be a flick or even just a whiffed punch. You have a right to defend yourself from even just the threat of bodily harm. You are permitted by the law to incapacitate and assailant up until you remove them as a threat.
