Well 2% from a statistically perspective could be due to sampling error. Often time in studies we use an alpha value of 5% meaning unless the woman are making more than 5% more than men we can't actually say they are making more. It can be due to sampling error,etc. It is all depends on the threshold of confidence intervals used in the study.
