So, in point of fact she still has something to do with the child - paying child support. She may have given up her rights of guardianship but she was not able to "sign over" all her rights as the court left her with the financial obligation of support. Custody is about who gets primary Guardianship of a minor. Joint custody is shared while sole custody is one parent.
