The husband was the authority over his wife, if she wanted buy something it was up to the husband to say yes or no. In English common law the fathers had custody of the children not the mothers. Aside from war, I don't see how men were oppressed.

Legally and socially women were kept down in many areas of life ex. owning property, fair share of inheritance, right to earn wages and have financial autonomy, , husband is the head of the household and authority over their wives. It was a pretty sexist time and women were considered children and men the authority.
