I know you're just trolling, but people in this sub by and large have considered these issues about 100x more than you have, and you're not going to "win" a "debate".

You may be a bit out of touch with the current world due to being older but we youngster know whats up. Ha! RemindMe 15 years. We'll see how you feel about that. People don't change that much in whatever it was... 12 years since I was in undergrad. And we're talking about fundamental human nature stuff. Again, no society in history, anywhere on this planet, hasn't had and revered some form of marriage. Meanwhile, let's note that as a kid, you're talking to someone with experience. That is, befor…

married and divorced Those are opposites. Anyway, it's sad that you kids have written off long-term committed relationships. When you mature, you'll reconsider that position (unless you're just addicted to hookup culture and are never able to form lasting bonds like every human generation before you). And I would note that your thinking on this is exactly how the boomers felt in about 1967. If you're worried about fate, then I'm not sure it matters whether you choose to get married or not, since…

This is just all about poor reasoning. "I heard of someone one time who got in a car crash. So, I'm never going to leave my house." That's basically OP's position.

Sure, but this anecdote could be against commitment just as much as it could be against marriage. He doesn't discuss how she took everything in the divorce, got some custody of the kids, left him with terrible credit, etc. that would differentiate this situation as marriage rather than just commitment. Also, given the cultural universality of sanctified union, I think we could broaden "marriage" to essentially mean "profound commitment". But again, it really doesn't matter in the case of this po…

This is an anecdote. If someone else's lone bad experience makes you too afraid to commit to someone you love, I feel badly for you, because now this awful woman hurt you in addition to your friend (and you facilitated her harming you by taking her example as a limitation on your own life). In contrast to your friend's case, I will submit that people in every culture on earth voluntarily engage in and enjoy some form of sanctified union. Yes, it can go wrong. No, you shouldn't throw the baby out…

This sounds like the gradeschool I went to in the 90s. 20 female teachers, 2 male teachers, both only in the 6th grade classrooms - K-5 had no males interacting with them at all. The music teacher, the librarian, the technology lab teacher, the gym instructor, the principal, the nurse, the counselor, the lunch ladies - all women.

I don't feel that way. I don't think it was every a right outside of the actual decision of Roe, but regardless probably best to have legal. I do appreciate that we can have political diversity in this country, and two different states can have two different laws on a topic. Hopefully, they'll all make good laws, but I'd rather have a system in which 70% of people get what they want than one in which 50% get what they want because an issue is handled at the federal level.

My wife and I talked about it for if we have a boy. We decided against it, mainly because of the moral hazard - he might be like me and not care, or he might be all upset about it, and there's really no upside. So all else being equal, and only seeing downsides, it's a no for us.

You're being downvoted, but if there is any meaningful male privilege, you're totally right. Privilege, advantage, etc. does not exist on a single continuum. You can be advantaged in one way and disadvantaged in another. If that's from others, you could say that you can be privileged in one way and discriminated against in another. You can be more likely to be hired as an electrician, but then more likely to be scrutinized when your electrician job takes you to a school. Whether there's any mean…

An interesting perspective. But I have to admit, it feels like a not-fully-defeminized perspective that misses a lot of features of being a male, in favor of supporting some narratives. The crux of this, to me, is the "why is this so?" explanation the person tries to give. And with women, I think they're essentially right - armor against creepy men. Now, I recognize that's a chicken-or-egg situation, but essentially a decent assessment. But then, with men, they're trying to claim it's because of…

That's conflict postponement as much as it is conflict resolution. Certainly one partner getting their way exclusively in one isolated instance isn't a serious problem, but one person getting her way in every decision for many years to the exclusion of the other just postponed dealing with the serious problems until there's no more available pressure relief, and a lot is riding on the relationship (kids, real estate, etc.).
/r/MensRights19/12/21 05:03 PM
3

Right - I think we're agreeing on that. I think would go a step further, though, to say that "Happy wife, happy life" is a conflict avoidance excuse for men - it's a rationalization for why they accommodate as a rule, rather than actually asserting their own priorities with their partner, which as you allude to, will work for a day but be destructive for a decade.

John Gottman is a researcher who spent 40 years studying couples longitudinally, and by the late 90's, could predict whether a married couple would still be married or be divorced in 10 years to 91% accuracy by observing a 5-minute conversation between the couple. His method for making that prediction wasn't intuition that only he had - it was a coding scheme that any person (that is, any grad student working for his lab) could be trained to use. I say this just as a preface, to help place this …

The most noteworthy thing about this to me is that this interviewer lady, who cannot get out of her own way and let other people talk, somehow manages to take a simple assumption about heights based on the r=.40 correlation between sex and height, and apply the terms "misogynistic", "problematic", and "offensive" to it in the span of maybe 60 seconds. I dunno - this sounds great, actually. This is a long-term couple who jointly participates in home ownership. I see that she's trying to make it more toxic than it is, but I am doubtful that there's any deceit going on; and if there is deceit, it may be a very heartwarming surprise, like after some number of years, she reveals to him that they now own the house free and clear (or have $100k equity in the house, or etc.).

I will admit that at this point, it's a bit of a dead horse that feminists don't seek equality. Frankly, no social justice movements are about equality anymore. They all were at some time, and they were very right to do so. Now, they seek compensatory discrimination in the form of affirmative action and similar campaigns designed to "settle the score". I was raised, not all that long ago, to be 100%, completely committed to equality, such as equality of opportunity, equal protection under the la…

I'll preface this by saying it's off-topic. Can someone explain the trend of people using 'women' in place of the singular 'woman'? I swear I see 'women' more often on Reddit to denote a singular person than 'woman'. Why? I'm not a men. Why is she a women? Makes no sense. And given the prevalence, it doesn't seem to be an autocorrect issue.

In my middle school, kids were drinking on the bus, one girl had a baby, another had an abortion (just the one that I know of), I remember seeing kids smoking weed on the playground, and there were 50 fist fights before Christmas one year, some also involving the parents. We (>200 kids at a time) used to all form a ring so the teachers/admins couldn't get in to break up the fights. Being 13 is different in different places.

But this is ultimately the reason he's being berated. That is, his opponents say, "But he's just so bad and my cause is just so noble, that nothing is off-limits in my crusade". People want to fight fire with fire, closely related to the philosophy that two wrongs make a right. In this case, I think it's more valuable to empathize as one would with any other person.

The disturbing part of this is the nonchalance with which feminists throw the term "rapist" around. All the other parts outside the green circle are just juvenile name-calling, but the choice to include "rapist", a term that could put an accused man in prison or end his career, demonstrates that it's just another name to call someone. That is, for some feminists, "rapist" doesn't mean "someone who committed rape", it means "man whose opinions I really really don't like." So, isn't it noteworthy …

Listen, when a large enough force invades that we need a draft, we can talk. But we live in thr nuclear era - the escalation no longer happens across months or years of troop build-ups and mass amphibious landings. Military escalation in this century (at least, escalation that poses an,actual threat to the American people) will happen faster than even the period you need to train people who've been drafted.

But, I think a deeper gripe here is with this style of expression, which is about taking tautologies and making them hyperbolic to the point of absurdity (as an enforcement of Tumblr-flavored 'equity' over equality). To demonstrate this, just replace all the gendered terms …

Well, it can remain logically consistent if they're simply willing to change their title to "Cosmo: The Magazine for Effing Horrible Women". Edit: Actually has a nice ring to it...

Sounds like some sort of mental health issues going on TBH - that's a huge 180 for a person to take all at once without some underlying neurological changes, even at her age. But anyway, 19 year old girls are not about to be the stalwarts of anybody's life. That aspect can, and probably even has a tendancy to improve with time.

This is a very rational conclusion for you to come to, and I support it. Playing sports, of course, is an entirely different animal. But watching sports is more about watching celebrities play a game show.

Fascinating. This could potentially be an ideal arrangement... Edit: Not to imply that I or we would be the sole beneficiaries of selection of only the top 10% of men - just that these women are developing ways to provide for the parts of relationships that they enjoy and obsess over and that I have little interest in providing. She can titter all day with her lesbian friend and write a poem and make croissants - I'm not missing out there.

Biology. Do you like girls? Well, they're obsolete though - you've got hands, don't you? You've got the internet. You know what to do. (But you still like girls, and they still like men.) A related issue: women seek leadership more than men. It's hard for men to understand that a strong leader is very attractive to women - someone with vision and drive, who affects the world around him much more than it affects him, and who people respect and will follow. They are not going to get this in a big …

This is an important distinction. This was not science, and predictive validity can only be such if the results are known to be reproducible. And we'd need good data tracking and a large sample size to ascertain that. However, that's not to say that scientific data about relationships doesn't exist. Dr. John Gottman of University of Washington has spent a career studying couples and marriages. He can predict with 91% accuracy whether any couple will be married in 10 years by watching them intera…

Oh, you mean the absolute least likely people to commit violent crimes? There's been some discussion in the concealed carry subreddit about how to stay safe when protests are popping up everywhere. The consensus has been - stay away from any protesting activities at all costs. TL;DR - people carrying concealed are like bears. They're more afraid of you than you are of them. Edit: I guess your comment is ambiguous. Are you talking about regular old women's march type protesters, or violent mobs?

In local political campaigns, people talk about categorizing the electorate into three groups: the Saints, the Sinners, and the Saveables. The Saints will vote for you, pretty much no matter what. The Sinners will never vote for you, pretty much no matter what. The Saveables can be caused to vote for you, or caused to vote for your opponent. Now, like all metaphors, this one breaks down eventually, and we might also complain that these days, the number of Savables is at an all-time low - everybo…

Mildly off topic here, but yeah, most people are a little dehydrated all the time. Especially the ones who drink coffee in the morning and alcohol at night - it makes it really difficult to maintain reasonable hydration.

I think this is a cool physical visualization technique, akin to the power stance. But it also betrays some ignorance about game animals. So, good for you - keep it up. But if you ever visit the kind of place where I live, where most men (and lots of women) hunt, just don't tell anyone about it, or they will want to teach you some new things about how deer work, what they're called, etc. Not trying to be negative - just saving some embarassment. Glad it's working for you.

This is a recognized effect in the developmental psychology literature. That is, scientists agree with you, generally speaking. However, this is only true within certain cultures, obviously more in affluent and educated cultures than others. I read a case study in college (in a class on developmental psychology) about a place in Southeast Asia where boys marry and become the head of their household when they turn 13. Period. And guess what - if you come back and interview them at age 14, they ex…

Sort of unrelated aspect of this post, but: When you ask your unmarried SO to go to your family's wedding, you should pitch in for at least half of their travel costs. Cause they sure as hell don't want to go, let alone pay for going. Again, mostly unrelated to the entitlement issue here.

A little bit of not telling this story at all would also help. All these cheesy mind-blow bold font moments and utterly transparent autobiographical tone... I didn't dig it and want my 10 mins back. All the way i was hoping it would turn good and live up to the promise I would have something to learn from this story, but it never happened.

Amen. Young person says "OMG my life totally changed, it's such a big deal!" No, it's not. And the storytelling with the bold font lines just ruined it for me - it was like some sort of infomercial in story form. TL;DR. Or just DR. Undergrad changed in college and thinks a you have a lot to learn from his story. I expected the comments on this story to be ripping it apart, and frankly I'm disappointed that all these people in this sub of non-conformity are just following along with this dumb sto…

Sounds a bit like some of Robert Greene's Art of Seduction. Some of that book is outright bullshit, but this is not.
