For me, I often think about how in the past women were treated similarly when perceived as masculine or doing "masculine" things, as to how men are currently treated when perceived as feminine or doing "feminine" things. Thinking of the era where it was scandalous for women to wear pants for example. So if in the not so long ago past men were shamed and disallowed from being feminine and women were shamed and disallowed from being masculine, then feminism specifically and famously fought for wom…

I was just thinking about this recently, I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this. I'm in America and a woman for context, but I've been working through some local mental health groups/classes and every single one was ran by women and had 95% female attendees. Unsurprisingly, the language used was often gendered - not overtly, let me be clear, but in the way you are pointing out - a mountain of small assumptions and implicit bias that overall adds up to an impression that men aren't being con…

That's great, having the skill set you already developed and still having the resources directly available as you navigate this definitely sets you up for success.

Just jumping in to add that if you aren't already in therapy, I would highly recommend it since you do have a trauma history informing your beliefs. Reading differing views and engaging in introspection is wonderful and helpful, but with trauma you can easily find yourself completely intellectually aware of the truth but at the same time completely unable to truly believe it/act accordingly because of entrenched trauma responses. It's no weakness to seek help, and your son will benefit as much a…

Good idea, thank you. Already found some domestic abuse resources there, digging in to see if they seem good ones to recommend.

A lot, I would say it's hard to find a feminist who doesn't make sure to consistently and vocally take a public stance on it. On top of that, it's one of the few things a feminist can do to get fully ostracized and kicked out of a feminist org or association. Goes both ways, radical feminists categorically will not tolerate a trans supporting feminist and liberal feminists categorically will not tolerate a TERF.

I usually don't try to hit anyone with the "well why aren't you calling those people out if you don't agree with them?" argument (because I think there can be many ways and reasons that happens), but I think the situation with TERFs makes this a pretty damning point. The fact is that liberal feminists adopted every one of radical feminism's most extreme and biased tenets without pause but have developed widespread, coordinated, total rejection of TERF rhetoric. Sure there's a fight over it, beca…

Sexist thing that is widely acknowledged, but rarely acknowledged as sexist count? The belief (and following behavior) that men are by default predatory.

When I'm in a more humorous mood, it always strikes me as funny that the pro women narrative is that we were completely hopelessly dominated for thousands of years by a group of people so inept at domination and oppression they constantly and consistently "backfired" that oppression onto themselves. Like damn. You'd think any group powerful and organized enough to do this would do it...better? If you're strong enough to beat the entire combined force of women, and organized enough to get all men…

I think it's helpful to understand the 2% and 40% statistics are the 2 extremes of the spectrum each supported by only one study (it has been a couple years since I read about it but afaik). The very fact that we have something like 20 studies on the matter and none of them fully agree with each other means I don't think we should consider this well settled/understood. That being said, I think it's reasonable enough for broad understanding to use as a placeholder assumption that rape is falsely …

I don't think it's fair, exactly, but bear with me: There definitely is still sexism in our society impacting women. Not as big or as important as the basic civil rights and protections issues of the past, but still there and still deserving of being addressed and improved. I'm not pleased to see people retreading the path of feminism and leaning into division and downplaying 'the other side.' Mostly though, I resent this portrayal of feminism. Past and present, the problem is that feminists bui…

It's my habit to ask anyone who I part ways with late at night or in otherwise more potentially risky circumstances to text me when they get home alright, anything really even if just an emoji, I don't need to be kept abreast of all details just that you are okay and you got where you were headed safely. Men are always surprised, and I've had multiple conversations where I gently reproached them for not texting me when they said they would and they were again surprised and said they thought I wa…

I think a major component of why the police immediately became suspicious is because the girlfriend was out on a walk when they arrived. Imagine you've just got a call from a woman who says she's being beaten and had to lock herself in the bathroom, so you rush over and find her having casually left for a walk. You talk to the bf and he tells his story, a major component of which is that she wouldn't let him leave. I think it's fair to immediately suspect that the partner who is free to leave an…

Another possible explanation that has interested me for a while now is that as a woman, hearing feminists or conservative women (the ones who also believe men are inherently predatory) talk about men has always elicited the "what the fuck kind of men are you surrounded by?" reaction from me, but what if that is in fact what is happening. What if predatory, aggressive, abusive men cluster around those who believe those traits are inherent or the result of patriarchy. Think about it, if someone we…
