Tax Benefit: If the husband makes 100K and the wife makes 0 (stay at home mom), the government taxes them like they both make 50K which is @ a lower rate than if the government taxed the husband @ 100K alone. (since more income = higher tax rate) Tax Penalty: If husband and wife both make 50K, the government taxes them like they make 100K together which is @ a higher rate than if they made 50K individually.
