I doubt they would be using rusty blades or something just laying in the dirt I doubt they were using sterile knives either. Also I was reading that circumcision before 140 AD consisted of just removing the very tip of the foreskin (a procedure called Milah). After 140 AD Periah was introduced which was the complete removal of the foreskin supposedly to discourage attempts at foreskin restoration.

Even without selling the foreskin hospitals are making huge amount of money from infant circumcision. About 4.136 million children were born in 2009. Roughly half of them were male and 32.5% of them were circumcised in hospitals. (although that number is probably higher) That's 672,100 circumcisions and at a couple hundred dollars per procedure (say $200) that comes out to $134 million.

Because 'Female mutilation is much worse' Classics are classics for a reason you see. This is something that is useless to argue. Compare circumcision to labiaplasty instead. Then they can't use the "but so and so is worse" because labiaplasty is being preformed in US hospitals and hasn't been proven harmful. This is just as valid as using traditional FGC since the FGM bill passed in 1996 outlaws labiaplasty on minors as well as traditional FGC.

Okay then. Whether or not you have a scar is probably the easiest way to determine if you are circumcised or not but not all circumcised men have a scar (or at least a noticeable one). Picture of a circumcision scar. Circumcision scars can vary in shape and color. The next best way would be to determine whether or not you have a ridged band. Since the ridged band is located right at the tip of the foreskin it is always removed during circumcision and if you have one you haven't been circumcised.

Actually that's a good point. If rape kits can exonerate the falsely accused, then (like paternity tests) it helps everyone but liars - it reveals the truth. You can stretch your remaining skin into something that resembles a foreskin. Of course you can never restore a frenulum or ridged band but you do get the benefits of having your glans covered and the gliding action. This all takes years though. Most men wear stretching devices every day and only after 2+ years do they have similar coverage an intact man would have. I wish someone would come up with a surgical foreskin restoration method that doesn't suck and cost a lot of money.

How do the benefits of male circumcision not apply to female circumcision? The whole idea that male circumcision prevents STDs and is cleaner is because it has less moist skin to trap bacteria. The bill is only outlawing circumcision on non consenting minors. The article is indeed poorly written and whether it is intentional or not I don't know. Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 24 States Parties shall take all effective and appropriate measures with a view to abolishing traditional practices prejudicial to the health of children. Of course the US has yet to ratify this convention (along with Somalia).

The foreskin is fused to the glans when you are an infant (and sometimes remains fused all the way up to puberty) so it must be forcefully retracted in order to be removed safely and anesthesia isn't used during infant circumcision. Compared to an adult circumcision where the foreskin is not fused to the glans and you receive anesthesia for the operation and painkillers for the recovery.
