Most crimes are not committed with guns and even the gangs RARELY have guns. I remember a case from a few years very well where big biker gangs hq was raided and all their members apartments where searched they literally didn't find a single gun. What venue is it, who else is involved, what are the objectives of the parties involvend and many more. I think it's a judgement call that has to happen incredibly quickly. But you can almost never go wrong with not fighting. That being said, I will personally go for a confrontation most of the time (as OP said an actual fight is very rare) although I wouldn't advice anyone to EVER do it. I feel like oftentimes it's about who's more fucked up in the head/has the least to lose/is more sneaky.
