No antidepressants "increase" the level of chemicals in your brain... as in they don't magically put serotonin there when it previously was lacking. Depression can happen in a lot of ways, but how it works in the brain is that your receptors will release chemicals (like serotonin, or norepinephrine or dopamine), and then other receptors will reabsorb those chemicals and recycle them.
