For EMT's, their training, at least where I live, is incredibly...short. My local community college has a 40 credit program to be an EMT. That's about 18 months. I don't know if this is standard, but they aren't exactly doctors or even nurses. They would've told you what the pay was when you trained and she still went ahead with it anyway.

As an aside, why is it that healthcare is the field of choice for not-so-smart single mothers? Almost every single one I know that never graduated from college either went for Medical Assisting, Nurse's Aide, or something similar. Then, they all wait 10 years and decide 40 is the time when they need to go to nursing school because that is the last attainable job that is relatively easy to get (ASN) and carries any semblance of prestige.
