Realistically I suspect that is what the data is likely to represent. Still pretty fucking bleak.

I don’t usually care for slippery slope arguments but in this case it seems valid. Where does it end if you go down that route? You’d be hard pressed to name a human joy that can’t have negative consequences, all sports come with a risk of injury, all art can offend someone or trigger feelings of distress. Even doing nothing can be harmful, people that go unstimulated for too long can develop depression or psychosis.

Ok, now read it in the context of the sentence immediately before that and do your level best not to reach for the most bad faith interpretation you can summon up.

That’s quite clearly not what I said. I said it doesn’t make sense to criminalise charging for something it’s legal to do for free.

Organ sales are a tricky one because of how they interact with long term healthcare but I think this is more an argument for our moral duty to have good societal safety nets than anything else. For clarity my position is partially informed by having done some sex work myself and not feeling at all victimised by it.

As a general rule I don’t think it makes sense to criminalise doing for money something it’s legal to do for free. Given I quite like having sex I’d rather we not make that illegal.

I’d argue it’s both because it’s hard to prove and myth/prejudices. The recent Rebecca Goodwin situation for example shows that some police forces are so shit that even with video evidence they won’t care unless you’re the right kind of victim. We shouldn’t dismiss prejudice in this as often it’s the same set of biases that really screw over male victims.

Honestly I think a lot of it is absolute dog shit communication and education. Patriarchy in popular usage both for and against are distinct from one and other and both of them are distinct from patriarchy as defined in academia. Pop-feminism’s reductive version of patriarchy is obviously not reflective of reality and that is what most criticism gets levelled at. Those who aren’t interested in reading textbooks and academic journals for fun aren’t critiquing Bell Hooks.

You say that like it isn’t still advocating in favour of sex discrimination. The exact thing being criticised.

These are all fucked up things but none of them change that there is a concerted effort in red states to deny women bodily autonomy. Let’s not play oppression olympics here.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/06/24 11:07 PM

I wouldn't argue for that exact line personally, chunks of red America are currently going pretty hard on actively discriminating against women.

Given how focused the current ones are on fully embracing the red Tory mantle I think they’re mostly focusing their culture wars arm on stripping trans rights down to the bone.

If you’re looking to make a persuasive argument I’d focus on the specific behaviours rather than the term and emphasise how they reinforce gender essentialism. Once you’ve given the ground that there are intrinsic universal truths about all men and all women you have a much harder time disputing traditional gender roles.

You could almost generalise this and call it the 101 problem. It’s the same overly broad and simplified understanding that has people trying to argue economics based on a half coherent understanding of supply and demand or evolution as described by someone that sort of knows what selection pressures are but doesn’t really get how selecting for group cooperation works.

Yes, homelessness and risk of starvation are much reduced in western nations, that is because we have constraints on the free market in place. That is rather my point. Were we to eliminate those controls starvation and homelessness would happen. There is no compatibly severe consequence in allowing people to love freely.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates08/01/23 10:52 AM
1

There is an obvious difference in consequence though. If I don't have enough money my life is at risk, I will likely face homelessness or starvation. If I don't have enough sex then, from prior experience the worst case scenario is that I jerk off so much that my bedroom starts to stink. You also have to look at the harm on the other side, if you constrain sex and romantic relationships to a rigid externally imposed structure then you've got to deal with the consequences of those restrictions li…

I had wondered how much of this was a case of increased frequency vs increased reporting and surprisingly yes there really has been a dramatic increase in cases from 2018 onwards, almost doubling in that year and not coming down. The increase however is not in the kind of cases we typicaly think of as school shootings. Active shooter events, those that follow the patterns of Columbine, Sandy Hook or Virginia Tech make up a small fraction of school shootings with an upper bound of 11 in a year (2…

Agreed, from a compassionate view a lot of trans men get a really nasty shock when mens issues they may never have been aware of start to impact them at a time when they already have enough to deal with. In the other direction trans women have to suffer all the usual men are predators bullshit without even the option to just avoid women only spaces unless they want to out themselves. From a pragmatic view the trans experience can be key for getting first hand experience with differences of treat…

Exactly this. Abortion is one of many bodily autonomy issues where the government should have no say whatsoever. Similar to HRT for gender transition, permanent forms of contraceptives like tubal ligation or vasectomy and the use of recreational drugs it is not the government's place to say what one may do to their own body unless there are clearly provable externalities for other members of society.

Should be gender neutral but otherwise the general principle rule of don’t be a creep that goes around waving your genitals at uninterested strangers is as reasonable online as off. Jail time seems a bit harsh for online as it doesn’t pose the kind of implicit threat of sexual assault that offline does. I assume that as with most UK law it’s given that the judge has lenience on sentencing so jail is more what can be applied to an aggressive repeat offender rather than a one off idiot that thinks…

I’d be fine with not getting married, we already own a house together so it’s not like there is any ambiguity about our long term commitment. I’m probably influenced by the fact that my aunt and uncle had been together for thirty years and raised two kids before deciding to get married purely to dodge inheritance tax when one of them dies.

I wonder how much of the difference in injury comes from the majority of commercial vehicles being driven by men. In any given crash the bigger vehicle is likely to come out of things better so you’d imagine truckers might be skewing the numbers.

Very well written, including the follow up replies. Personally I’ve always liked the simple intuition pump of, “OK, so your girlfriend thinks it’d be really hot to peg you or try scat play, will your position on not denying a partner pleasure remain consistent?”

Yeah this is to my mind the sensible option. Don't have sex you aren't comfortable having, that only rewards jackasses and will likely make you miserable. Equally don't expect the guy you're dating to pay for everything as that makes it seem like you're there for the free food rather than the company. If you're enjoying a guy's company as much as he is enjoying yours then spending time together should be it's own reward for both of you and so it follows you should both be contributing to the cos…

I think it’s a product of people seeing human rights issues as a zero sum game. Honestly this is why I really dislike how the term privilege is used in a lot of discourse. When you call not being harassed by cops white privilege or not being judged for going without makeup male privilege you are treating those injustices as a default some people are unfairly immune to rather than an active failure in need of correcting. It may not be intentional but it really seems to seep into how people think …

I think we have very different experiences dude. Most of the sex I have involves both parties working towards mutual gratification and tends to result in the same. I really don’t want this to sound mean but if you’re seeing sex as work you have to do in order to cum and your partner isn’t getting off it may be time to sit down and talk together about why you aren’t having a good time.

Yeah the ego thing is a fairly horrible part of society and it comes in from so many different angles. Frankly there is a degree to which I think we actually need to destigmatize bad sex, or even just middle of the road Ok sex. Sometimes people are just going to realise part way through that they aren’t that compatible, maybe one of them gets a cramp in the other’s favourite position or they just prefer different stimuli, it should be a positive step to say ‘this isn’t working for me, here is wh…

I’m always surprised to hear there are men that don’t. Even if you don’t care about fairness or making your partner happy pure self interest should be enough. Do I hook up with the guy who gets me off every time or the one that can’t be bothered seems like an obvious choice. To be totally realistic there were a few times when I was younger that my partner was probably faking it and I can’t feel too bad about that. It’s a two way street after all. Additional barriers are caused by shelters with extra rules for entry. Participants shared examples of being refused service for reasons that included pregnancy, not meeting domestic abuse criteria, shelters unsuited to their physical needs or for being too masculine-presenting. But remember, women most affected.

See if that was what the Texas law did I might actually be sympathetic but it isn’t. The Texas law allows any totally uninvolved person to sue. The person you’re fucking needed to consent, the crazy asshole down the street shouldn’t have any legal involvement.

Seems totally different. If someone agrees to sex under specific conditions (in this case with a condom) and you disregard those conditions you’re the one in the wrong. Frankly if you can’t see the difference here you actually are the creepy borderline rapist stereotype people present MRAs as.

I feel like a lot of this comes from the language used in social justice circles at present, particularly the use of ‘privilege’ to refer to what should be seen as bare minimums going unjustly unfulfilled. When you treat things like not being harassed or unjustly imprisoned as scarce commodities only available to the most advantaged everything starts to look like a zero sum game.

It's not that difficult to think "bob is a good guy but I'd never want to fuck someone who looks like that." The dude missing half his teeth and weighing three hundred pounds has no impact on his ability to play cards but it certainly hurts his ability to get my dick hard.

Sounds like a pretty massive generalisation. Certainly I’ve had relationships I’ve left because what I was getting out wasn’t worth what I was putting in and I’m hardly unique in that. Hell for most of my relationship history I’d say men have been more generous and considerate partners than women.

I think you're underestimating how much variety there is in personal preference. Emotional intimacy also has value and typically requires a certain amount of time to develop. There are a good number of guys, myself included that would rather the perks of an ongoing relationship than the variety of multiple one night stands. Granted this is only true if you can find a woman who actually makes you happy outside of the bedroom, if you've not got the option of a good relationship then sure the grati…

I'm cautious about the term anti-feminist as I've noticed a tendency for defining yourself by opposition can make it very easy to fall into tribalism and accepting decidedly undesirable allies. (See the way TERFS find themselves frequently allied with conservatives for a great example of how hatred can make people betray their stated values if it hurts their enemies.) Better to say that as a group primarily concerned with putting an end to sex and gender discrimination we come into conflict with…

I think intent is important, I wouldn’t consider it such unless I had reason to think the attacker had some sort of sexual motive. Same way I wouldn’t think a girl getting punched in the tit counts unless there was sexual intent. Fights are messy, mostly you just hit whatever is convenient.

I think one of the reasons for the preference for feminine men is that it allows the female reader to project into one of the male roles. Most girls can’t pretend a guy talking about how sexy he finds his partners tight abs and huge cock is speaking to her, if they’re talking about them in terms of cuteness and delicate features the line can translate one to one with how they would like a guy to look at them. This is why the heroines in romance novels have all the personality of a piece of cardb…

Other: I think this is an oversimplification. There are advantages and disadvantages to the expectation of male power. The net outcome for a given individual is a product of their ability and desire to conform to that role. I would suggest that any gender role be it for or against male power would have negative outcomes for those unsuited to it and that the optimal scenario is one in which social pressures to conform are reduced across the board.

It’s an economist’s answer I know. The upside is that this may just be indicative of the kind of single women who use online dating sites rather than a more general trend. Think incentive structures for someone concerned with how they are perceived being better served by an online space where they can receive wider adulation for less effort. Honestly, signalling your current and/or desired lifestyle seems like a sensible thing to do with a dating profile assuming you're intending to find a long-term partner. Mutual compatibility of interests is kind of a fundamental part of any successful relationship so why not filter out those who don't share those interests at step 1? I can’t speak for the other two but Leguin’s approach to gender in left hand of darkness is pretty interesting. LHOD posits a genderless race of humanoids that the protagonist encounters in his role as an interplanetary diplomat. Legion uses an unreliable narrator to comment on unconscious bias and gender roles when his labels and projections of gender don’t line up with reality. Gotta disagree there, much as a woman shouldn’t be able to compel a man to pay child support for a kid he doesn’t want a man shouldn’t be able to compel a woman to give birth to a child she doesn’t want. Letting someone talk isn’t the same as granting their ideas equal status. In the case of a subreddit concerns of derailment seem intuitively to be countered by the downvote system and the ability for multiple conversations to be held in parallel. Core to my concerns is that controlling people’s speech never stops at its initial boundaries. What starts as an attempt to ensure only productive conversations are had inevitably cascades into forbidding ideas outside of established dogma.

Much as I find the kind of posts referenced to be obnoxious I think there are instrumental benefits to keeping an open forum. 1) It is harder to misrepresent our ideas as hostile if we allow open dissent. 1a) If open dissent looks like an angry child having a tantrum that hurts our opponents more than it does us. 2) The more censorious a group gets the more circle jerk prone they become. We aren’t immune to bias and presumably want to be correct more than we want to be comfortable. 3) Even is mo…

That assumes that there would be some reason for false accusations to be more likely to go to court than not. Why wouldn't there be an at least equal proportion of false accusations that don't make it to trial? For that matter unreported incidence of rape isn't a relevant factor when establishing the risk that a report is false, by definition they are unreported and as such don't influence the probabilities of cases actually reported.
