The point is that women’s work has been equal to men’s this entire time yet essentially none of the women get recognized for it. If we were actually judging films by their merits at least 50% of nominees would be women. No one is being punished if women get equal recognition. That is far more sexist and void of equality than nominating a female as an act of leveling the field of recognition. There is absolutely 0% chance that over all this time there simply hasn’t been that many female directors creating awards-worthy work.
